Any idea as to which bullet proof jackets are exported??
The credit for this achievement goes to the Indian nuclear scientists of Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Mumbai.

First, they developed Boron Carbide pipes for their Pressurised Heavy Water Plants for producing electricity from atomic energy.

Later, they used this material and some other home grown technologies to fabricate India's own bullet proof jacket which has been named as 'Bhabha Kawach' in honour of Dr. Homi Jehangir Bhabha, the father of India's nuclear programme.

India's defence product exports have been rising.

New Delhi: India may be a big importer of defence equipment but has been making steady progress in exports of such products to a number of countries including those who are big names in the export market like the US, Australia, Finland, France, Germany, Israel, South Africa and Sweden.

These countries are in the list of 42 nations that also included Azerbaijan, Seychelles, Estonia, Indonesia, Guinea and the Philippines.

Minister of State for Defence, Shripad Naik, in a written reply to Rajya Sabha on Monday said the “cost of the items and quantum of foreign exchange earned varies from company to company" and the ministry did not keep a record of the quantum of foreign exchange earned.

Indian defence product exports to Australia included 5.56x45mm Ball MK N(SS109) cartridges, while it exported protective headgear and hard armour plates to Azerbaijan, helmets, bomb suppression blanket and soft armor panels to Germany, sleeping bags to Guinea, mortar shell covers to Israel, hard armour plates to the Netherlands and the US, radar parts, bullet proof vests and helmets with accessories to Singapore, detonators to South Africa and night vision binoculars to Thailand.

Indian exports to Qatar, Lebanon, Iraq, Equador, Uruguay, Japan and Egypt primarily comprised body protecting equipment, Naik said in his written response.

The minister’s response in Parliament comes a week after India organised the biennial Defence Expo in Lucknow that drew more than 1,000 Indian and foreign companies and more than 40 foreign delegations.

Under the“Make in India" flagship programme outlined in 2014, Prime Minister Narendra Modi government has been laying emphasis on defence manufacturing in India to build up the country's manufacturing base, ensure jobs for its youth and to bring down India’s arms import bill. India is the second largest importer of defence equipment just behind Saudi Arabia in 2019, according to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute.

In his speech at the DefExpo last week, Modi urged foreign manufacturers to set up base in India listing the steps the government has taken to improve India’s investment climate. He noted that the export of defence equipment from India was about ₹2,000 crore in 2014, the year he took office. In the last two years, it had gone up to ₹17,000 crore and in the next five years, India’s target was to export of $5 billion worth of military hardware which is about ₹35,000 crore, Modi added.

Hanoi also wants Akash Surface-to-Air Systems and Dhruv Advanced Light Helicopters

The first high-speed patrol boat being built for Vietnam under the $100-million Line of Credit (LoC) will be delivered by September, said JD Patil, whole time Director & Senior Executive Vice-President defence & smart technologies, Larsen & Toubro. Hanoi is procuring 12 such boats for its border guard force under the LoC extended in September 2014.

“We should be delivering the first boat this September. Five boats will be built by L&T while the remaining will be built in Vietnam. We are trying to finish the boats by mid 2021,” Mr. Patil told The Hindu on the sidelines of the DefExpo last week.

In 2016, India has extended another $500 million defence LoC to Vietnam and discussions are under way to identify the equipment. Defence sources said Vietnam has expressed interest in Akash Surface-to-Air Systems and Dhruv Advanced Light Helicopters.

India has also extended a defence LoC to Bangladesh and part of that is also for naval vessels. “We expect something from that as well.” He said exports are picking up pace.

Work Share With OFB

The L&T is also manufacturing 100 K9 Vajra-T self-propelled artillery guns for the Army with technology transfer from Hanwha Defence of South Korea. The 51st gun was delivered recently and the order will be completed by June after the which the plant would be idle and they are working on options, Mr. Patil said. “We are appealing to going for repeat order,” Mr. Patil said adding they are in discussions with two to three countries for exports.

In addition, the L&T is in discussions with the Ordnance Factory Board (OFB) to take over some of their work load for the large order for assembling the Russian T-90 tanks. “We have high level of automation and robotisation,” Mr. Patil said.

Another focus area for the company presently is underwater autonomous vehicles and Fire Control Radars (FCR). It is developing four such vehicles of which two are under testing.

There is a requirement for dual band FCRs as a tender for 250 mountain FCRs is under way through Make-II procedure. Towards this, the L&T has developed an FCR and radar systems for air defence applications. “The L&T has put significant efforts in developing FCR with all critical technologies being indigenously developed, Mr. Patil said and added they will be marketing this to friendly countries as well.

The company was also recently shortlisted along with the Mazgaon Docks Limited for the Navy’s submarine procurement under Project-75I.

India beats Russia, Poland to bag $40 million defence deal in Europe

New Delhi [India], Mar 1 (ANI): In a major success, India has bagged a deal worth USD 40 million to supply four indigenously-built weapon locating radars to Armenia by beating Russian and Polish firms.
"The deal is for supplying four Swathi weapon locating radars developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and manufactured by the Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) to Armenia in Europe," government sources told ANI.
The supply of the equipment to Armenia has already started and this is being considered as a big achievement for 'Make in India' programme in the defence sector, they said.
Sources said Armenians had conducted trials of systems offered by Russia and Poland that were also good but they decided to go for the reliable Indian system.
The contract is for four Swathi weapon locating radars which provide fast, automatic and accurate location of enemy weapons like mortars, shells and rockets in its 50-km range.
The radar can simultaneously handle multiple projectiles fired from different weapons at different locations. The Indian Army is also using the same radars for its operations along the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir where they trace the source of attack by Pakistani positions. The system was given for trial to Army in 2018.
Officials said the export order will help India open a new market for the sale of its indigenous systems, which are cheaper than their European and other rivals.
The Defence Ministry is also now looking at other orders from South-East Asia, Latin America and Middle-East countries for boosting defence exports for which a target of Rs 35,000 crore has been set by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. (ANI)
