The 14th edition of the biennial Auto Expo, slated for February 9-14, is expected to see 24 new launches and over 100 unveiling of vehicles, the organizers said today. The expo is being held at the India Expo Mart in Greater Noida, near the Capital, while components show will be held at the Pragati Maidan in Delhi from February 8-11. The joint inauguration of Auto Expo 2018 will be held on February 8.

"We are going to see over 24 launches and the unveiling of over 100 vehicles during the expo," Society for Indian Mobile Automobile Manufacturers Association (SIAM) head Sugato Sen said here during a media conference. This year's show will be much higher than the 2016 edition, which saw only two-three launches, he said. The new launches and the unveiling of the products will be from across segments --passenger and commercial vehicles and two-wheelers.

"On February 7-8, there is a preview of more than 100 products," chairman of the SIAM trade fair group, Arun Malhotra said. The expo is being organised by SIAM jointly with the Automotive Component Manufacturers Association of India (ACMA) and the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII).

Asked about some of the leading players such as Nissan, Audi, Volkswagen, Skoda, Ford and Ducati, skipping the mega event, Sen said the trend generally has been that only 50 percent of the SIAM members participate in the show.

"Some of the regulars have opted out. We have 48 members and none of the events in the past has seen more than 50 percent participation," Sen said. He, however, refuted reports in a section of the media, saying companies are skipping the show due to the high cost of participation, adding there are some new entrants like Korean Kia Motors and Japanese Kawasaki in the current expo.

"India right now is going through a huge disruption in the auto market. With the direct transition from BS-IV to BS-VI in two years and the EV plan etc, companies are not really bringing in new conventional vehicles anymore," he said.

"Also, we have not changed the space rentals since 2012. On the contrary, we have reduced them by offering discounts," he said. For the members, SIAM, offer space at Rs 8,200 per square meter rpt square meter as against Rs 8,900 per square meter he said.

Tata's Impact 2.0 - What's In Store?

Pratap Bose, Head of Design, Tata Motors, shares an exclusive sneak peek into the shape of Tatas to come.

Although Tata currently builds its cars on six different platforms, it will employ only two platforms from now - the new Advanced Modular Platform (AMP), which was unveiled last year; and the Q platform, which is essentially the L550 platform that underpins the Land Rover Discovery Sport.
Tata Motors’ new range of products crafted by the Impact design language has given the Indian brand a big boost in the past few years. The Tiago, followed by the Hexa, Tigor and the recently launched Nexon, have managed to command serious attention from car buyers. Recently, Tata announced that it will be showcasing its new Impact 2.0 design at this year’s Auto Expo. We got to chat with Pratap Bose, head of design at Tata Motors, to get a clearer picture of what Impact 2.0-endowed Tatas will be like.

AN INTRODUCTION

Tata’s Impact 1.0 design language helped the carmaker get customers to showrooms and take a peek at the Tiago, while the launch of the Nexon helped Tata put a stylish compact SUV on the road. The aim of Impact 2.0 is to take things a step further. According to Bose, the Indian car market is unlike any other in the world. To stand out in such an extremely competitive market, one needs something unique that will grab the attention of the masses.

REDESIGN vs EVOLUTION

A radical redesign usually doesn’t sit well with the general public. It can be perceived as the brand failing to believe in its previous design philosophies, and thus, the need to bin the previous work and starting afresh. But that is not the case with Impact 2.0. Pratap highlighted this point by stating that the design language of a brand is the maintainer of the family heritage. He went on to say “You’ll see in Impact 2.0 all the three exterior design elements - slingshot, DLO and humanity line - they’re all there, all recognisable but they’re more evolved.”
According to Pratap, a few years down the line we will be able to see the evolution of the Tata design right from the first-generation Indica.

FROM THE GROUND UP

“It’s not that the engineering team came up with something and then handed it over to the design team and said, ‘Now please put an attractive cover over this’,” he commented. The design team was involved in developing the AMP platform from day one. “It’s absolutely fundamental to understand that very few design teams are involved in the concept of a platform itself because the platform happens every 15-18 years - you don’t change a platform every 2-3 years.” he added.T

The AMP can underpin front-wheel-drive cars ranging from 3.8 metres to 4.4 metres in length, such as small hatchbacks to large crossovers. The Q platform, meanwhile, can underpin vehicles ranging from 4.4m to 4.8m in length, which makes it ideal for full-size SUVs. The AMP can easily accommodate 18-inch wheels while the Q platform can take wheels up to 21 inches in diameter. This flexibility opens up the possibility of Tata cars being exported to more markets.C

CARS EXPECTED

Tata will be looking at adding more hatchbacks to its portfolio. So, a hatch smaller than the Tiago is definitely on the cards. The X451 premium hatch, set to go up against the likes of the Maruti Suzuki Balenoand Hyundai Elite i20, will also sport the Impact 2.0 design language. In addition, the Q501 full-size SUV will certainly come as well. Bose also pointed out that the Impact 1.0 spawned only four products but the 2.0 will be looking at a much wider range of vehicles.
The Advanced Modular Platform will allow the carmaker to go in for a variety of body shapes, wheelbase and track sizes, making the possibilities endless. Tata will also be looking at developing cars that can fit in between segments.

IMPACT ON INTERIORS

The inspiration for the cabin, including texture, grain and design patterns, has been drawn from Indian architecture, albeit with a subtle and contemporary twist. The concepts present at the Auto Expo could give us a glimpse into what we can expect to see from the Indian manufacturer in the years to come. However, Bose confirmed that the Impact 2.0 will carry forward the floating screen display of the Nexon. The screen will not get taller but will definitely be wider.

GOING GLOBAL

Having these two platforms in its portfolio enables Tata Motors to develop products that can be adapted to the Indian market while simultaneously being competitive on a global level with slight modifications.

Tata has come a long way from making the Indica to the Tiago, not only in terms of design but in terms of overall quality and brand recognition as well. With Impact 2.0, the Indian carmaker seems to be heading in the right direction, darting towards being recognised as a truly global brand. What this new direction looks like in the flesh, we will only know at the 2018 Auto Expo. Till then we wait. Fingers crossed!

Tata is on a roll because of Land Rover. Massive improvement in their engines, designs and quality control.

I feel that they still have to address the quality of their assembly, and the clearances. We still get rattly junk-wagons that last about a year for good performance. They look good, though, and are adequately specced out. And, yes, the engines seem to be good; I had gone off Tata vehicles a few years ago, and have to get back to driving them.

Their recently launched products (horizonnext program) are quite good. One of my friends use the Zest and is quite satisfied with it.

Same with the Tiago, which is outselling the MS Celerio these days.

@Parthu @Abingdonboy @nair

Tata gone down 4 thousands vehicle sales a month........ They do 20+ now....... Their network has gone very weak, due to operational issues, as and when the volume goes up, network will become stronger and will slowly support the brand.....

I thought they did 18K last month...

an 18 industry
Msil 1,39,189
Hyundai 45,508
Mahindra 23.686
Tata 22,255
Honda 14,800
Toyota 12,351
Ford 9450
Renault 6920
N+D 4310
VW 3418
FCA 2151
Skoda 1270

December ??
More or less same in terms of market share, but December is a lean month for manufactures, especially for 4 wheeler industry, As the year change impacts the billing from the companies..... Normally companies change the frame numbers around dec 15th (the chassis numebr is used to identify the manufacturing year and month) but cannot be sold to market as the registration cannot be done.....

So ignore the Dec figures

Tata Motors to unveil 15 commercial vehicles at Auto Expo

Mumbai: India’s largest commercial vehicle (CV) maker Tata Motors Ltd is set to unveil 15 models and concepts at the Auto Expo, to be held in Noida on Delhi’s outskirts, from 9 to 14 February, a senior executive said on Wednesday.

The Tata group flagship will showcase four new trucks—a light commercial truck based on a new platform akin to the company’s advanced modular platform (AMP) for passenger vehicles, a 43-tonne rigid truck which the company claims has the highest tonnage in India, a light CV based on the platform shared by the Ultra truck, in addition to a truck running on LNG (liquefied natural gas) based on the same platform.

According to Girish Wagh, president of the CV unit at the Mumbai-based firm, “a purely electric 12-metre bus and an industry-first inter-city coach bus,” developed through its joint venture Tata Marcopolo Motors Ltd, with Brazilian bus manufacturer Marcopolo S.A., will also be showcased.

In addition to the vehicles, the maker of the Ace mini truck will also display its range of new engines developed in-house over the past two to three years, having spent close to Rs300 crore on development.

“Branded as the Turbotron range, we have 3-litre and 5-litre engines, along with a 3.3-litre variant. These can be upgraded to BS6 (Bharat Stage 6 emission norms) with minimal change” , Wagh said.

@nair it will be interesting to see how they'll comply with bs 6 norms...the great EGR vs SCR debate...
