This is a f*cking terrible idea. India worked hard to create a public rail so you don't end up with private wallets. And you want to directly hand the reigns over to enemy fintech to skim off every Indian transaction? Besides this is a trojan horse to a Chinese SWIFT - I guarantee it.
You've just made a gazillion trade deals, use it to build and promote UPI and think twice about which private wallets you want to enable on top.
It makes a lot of sense to expand our systems globally. We should make it easier for ppl to spend on our system. Chinese have created very good accessible platforms for selling their goods across the world.
Woah Woah Woah.. This is for cross border payments. No one is selling UPI or handing it over. This just enables UPI with Alipay within China and others with Alipay. You go to china. You go to a shop and just like how our shopkeeper have paytm, they most likely will have Alipay. So, just download Alipay and pay. Just like how you use Gpay, Phonepay here to pay. No exchange hassle, no cash.
We already have had such partnerships with UAE, FRANCE and other nation i don't recall right now. Edit:- Checked and found this As of late 2025/early 2026, UPI is operational in Bhutan, Singapore, UAE, Mauritius, Nepal, France, Sri Lanka, and Qatar.
So chill. Have you not seen Paypal, Mastercard, Visa been integrated on websites ? This is same but with a strictly payment platform.
Domestic market is regulated via RBI and i dont recall any mention of a new payment platform entering into the market.
And yup, i too believe that this is first step ( pilot project to check by enabling low value payment ) towards creating a mechanism to bypass Swift. For BRICS. Look at development of last 3-4 years regarding UPI partnership for cross-border payments.
