India - United States Relations

This doesn’t deny the core point that Trump made. This is not looking good from a domestic standpoint, I am not sure why MEA is being over defensive.
Ig we are just trying to be just diplomatic. It's typical Indian bureaucratic behaviour. I don't think Modi said anything like that to Trump. Trump is a bloody liar who loves to make things up to boost his image. We probably are still going to buy Russian oil simply because of the Rupee-Rubel Trade.

There are places where asserting dominance is required. If it is true that Modi didn’t say anything to Trump (most likely scenario), it should have been spelled out. The way things are heading with this government (on multiple fronts) they are in for a bloody rude awakening in the next election. It almost looks like the government is being sabotaged from inside.

The response was soft and balanced as trade wars are really starting to turn hot. Do have a look at the spate of measures and counter-measures that are on the table by various parties. DJT gave a statement and a response was necessary so it was given. There are things going on in the background that none of us are aware of as we are not privy to certain meetings. Could it have been worded more strongly? Absolutely. However, I see little use in further adding fuel to verbal exchanges when markets and deals do the actual talking.

If the BJP is in for a rude awakening, then please have a look at what Congress or other regional parties have on offer in the states that are coming up for election. Let me know of your assessment.

Folks need to look at the leverages India has over others and the dependencies critical domains have on others. You can talk the talk but can you walk the walk?

This is my gruff or blunt take.

100% agreed on the lack of options in India in terms of political parties. The base problem with people like DJT is this: the moment you cede an inch (take today’s statement which doesn’t explicitly deny Trump’s version) he will start claiming the whole damn town. Be prepared for him to parrot things like “I spoke to Modi, he is a great man and a great friend! I told him we will tarrif India and won’t trade with them. He assured me that they won’t buy oil from Russia” on a loop for quite some time to come.

How do you think that affects the Indian politics ? How do you think this plays out when a common man (who by the way are already paying quite high prices for fuel and Gadkari’s Sugarcane Juice) reads this news ?

How does this reflect on a global stage?

Sometimes, all choices are bad choices and yet a choice has to be made with self preservation in mind - they way the current stream of affairs is going on, soon it will be the country men being forced into making that exact same “bad choice” .

About “walking the talk” — we are systematically over indulging ourselves in business with US (Stryker, Apache — seriously??) to make them happy and also betting our strategic independence on them (F404, F414) when there were options (Safran, Rolls Royce). If these are not strategic suicide, I don’t know what is. These are the things which we have done to ourselves (among others) which prohibits us from being able to give it back to DJT in the language that he understands. Not to add the tax terrorism being made the norm on middle class. A government simply cannot be this tone deaf.

I guess this was more of a rant but I don’t know what to make of this circus right now!

This guy’s tweet nailed it —

This is true. He has done this to multiple leaders and countries. However, this is just the kind of statements that should be expected whether the inches are ceded or not. He is the dealmaker and he is the peacemaker. He'll remind you everyday and on all occasions. He has a new take on things with new details added on every other press meet. As per certain people, Pakistan did a 200IQ play and managed to get him on their side. How is that turning out? Look at the press statements and look at the reality. Let me know.

The less I say about Indian politics and voting patterns the better it will be. The common man in India is quite something by the way but that is for another occasion.

What is the image that you have on the global stage? Since this is the strategic front and people here are smart ask yourself, how is Indian politics, society, paramilitary, and military viewed on the global stage. Do have a look at the past three odd decades.

Several good points. However, there are certain aspects that require a nuanced take even here.

My friend, all this ties into real R&D and development. You (as in India) have lukewarm things to show for it. I apologise but you're experiencing what true diplomatic and technological arm twisting looks like. This is what it means to have complete dominance. I will not indulge in sprinkling salts on your wounds. You're an informed and smart individual.

It is one. I empathise with your emotions. Things are in a flux and the churn is widespread. Moderate your SM exposure.

You can question the govt. for sure. It is your right. I can relate to the tweet you quoted.

It's like fog of war right now. Expect things to get clear a month or two after Bihar elections are over. Nitish doesn't hold the sway and bihar BJP is not reformed yet to compensate for it.

If you look at the pattern, DJTs statements are more focused on causing domestic political implications for modi. It's him trying to put pressure and leverage it. Businessman kinda negotiations. Can't blame him.. he is indeed on frontfoot rn.

But once elections are over, it will be time for midterm elections run up for DJT. He might feel the heat.
If I was GOI.. I would start officially looking at their different defense systems.. and once DJT puts more pressure.. drop them one by one in run up to his elections. Tell the lobby that it's DJT who is creating uncertainty in domestic politics hence a deal can't be made.

Then you've got Putin coming in December.. if anyone thinks GOI will stop buying russian oil, they are either running a narrative or very naive.
We haven't stopped operations at Chabahar port, let alone russian oil.

Not disagreeing with either of you. Like I said, DJT wants a domestic backlash and it’s on GoI to ensure that our stance is clear. I fail to understand why MEA couldn’t put out a clear message that that DJT just farted from his mouth (again) and Modi didn’t say anything of what he is claiming. This puts the ball back in US’s court. It had to be just done once from our side, but no, MEA put out that monstrosity of a thing 😭

The f$#£ does he mean by “not aware of any conversation…” Does it mortally hurt these babus to talk straight?

I do agree they should have been a bit more upto the face about it. But perhaps a lot of things are happening behind the scene we don't know about. I mean MEA have issued rather upto the face statements before this one. So it's not like they can't do it. Perhaps they expect some kind of deal to happen behind the scene. Or something else might be at play here. We don't know. We still can't openly threaten DJT all the time. Because doing that also can screw up things in an unexpected way. And so far they haven't chickened out to any of DJT's threat, so I don't think GoI will face political backlash atleast wrt to DJT/America.

I would urge you to have realistic expectations from Babus of the MEA. They are not known for their courage. You may have a look at what P. Chidambaram had to say about things post 2008.
Either way from domestic political perspective normie people don't really read what MEA babu says. They care more about what some minister will say like S. Jaishankar or H. Puri. And they have been rather aggressive with their statements. That is all that matters to avg joe.

My guess is we ll reduce the accelerated excess purchase to normal purchase level, while shifting the excess purchase to US sources . We ll see.. we ll not dump Russia after all this narrative.

Excess purchase reduction will be the Off ramp for both countries.
You are taking Trump too seriously. Apparently, Pakistan assured him of shooting down 10 indian planes. And Epstine files do not exist. LAWL!

Diplomacy is the art of leaving the said unsaid. They neither confirmed nor denied if India is reducing or stopping oil import from Russia. LOL!

I am sure trade negotiations are going on. Both with Russia and USA.

And LAWL!

Yeah, MEA spokesperson Mr. Randhir Jaiswal literally said on camera that no such phone call conversation had taken place between Modi and Trump. That is the same as saying "Trump is a liar" on Camera.

BOOM!

Trump is using same shtick with India and Modi that he uses with minors he *censored*ed. Growing hot and cold, intimidating, abusing, deriding etc. Basically thats the only game he knows.

Unfortunately for him, neither Modi nor India are 14 year old girls from Epstine Island. No wonder he is frustrated, lying and pathetic. America is really in the shitters.
