Exercise Gaganshakti - 2018: ALG Operations
As part of the ongoing massive IAF exercise ‘Gaganshakti-2018', fighters, helicopters and transport assets have been deployed at the Advanced Landing Grounds (ALG). The ALGs are short prepared / unprepared airstrips close to the borders in the valleys, which have limited rail/road connectivity due to challenging terrain. ALGs located strategically offer an opportunity for swift mobility of troops and equipment close to our Northern and North Eastern borders.
A large number ALGs have been operationalised and are being utilised for conducting Inter Valley Troop Transfers (IVTT), Special Heliborne Operations, Air Landed operations and Special Operations by SFs, close to the simulated objective areas. SU-30s have also been operating from most ALGs in the NE sector. The full gamut of support services has been mobilised & operationalised at these ALGs for seamless conduct of these operations.
The challenges faced by our pilots in landing at these ALGs are unpredictable weather, undulating terrain, narrow corridor of approach / manoeuvring and short runway lengths. Braving these odds, the IAF pilots are undertaking these daring operations with extreme precision and professionalism, thus giving strategic fillip to these tactical operations. IVTT operations were carried out in Uttar Bharat Hills and at the Tezu-Walong in the North East sector. The support to these operations was possible due to the presence of ALGs at these strategic locations.
This exercise has proven to be an excellent opportunity for honing the skills of our aircrew and the support services to carry out these exacting operations.

The net effect of this exercise that China will never intervene in support of Pakistan now. They have seen the might of Indian Navy in IOR and now the might of IAF is on full display. They know what happens to their infrastructure in Tibet if they even engage in a limited battle with India. Pakistani ab akelay hee pitaingay.
I think China will attack us once America is engaged somewhere else, like the Gun Boat incident in Cuba in 1962 distracted America and China attacked us.
And about our might, our might is great but it was a simulation without an enemy attacking us. In a real war most of our communications, satellites and logistics will be made unusuable through cyber attacks, etc.
China has so much in stake, thye dont want a true competitor to emerge against them. It is not as simple as they will profit more by doing business with Bharat and ignore CPEC.
In this exercise even we did not simulate long range missile strikes and what makes you think that we are so very vulnerable in cyber warfare? cud it not be so that we are rather far better placed in this game than any of our likely adversaries? Just because we do not blow our trumpet, does not make us weak or less capable. just remember that 90% of all software being run on any device in the world has some Indian connection to it.
My pessimism is due to constant news about our defence and MoD website and servers being repeatedly hacked by even amature hackers. There's sometimes also information about data being copied from submarines, etc due to human error, etc.
So that leads me to assume that we are weak on both technical and administrative SOP implementation levels. If this much can during peactime then what should be expected during wartime.
Regarding our inputs on almost every software development on the planet, there was never any demonstrated effort from anyone to ever organize themselves into a contributing group for national purposes, so I don't think we can count on that either.
All I see is just 2 Mi-17 helicopter and 1 Antonov-32 . Whats so big about it ? IAF is hardly mobilizing 100 troops by this 3 transport aircrafts, which kind mission that would be in NE region ? Are they neutralizing 100 or 200 PLA personnel on our airbase ?
I hope IAF has carried some mission which had numerical strength. e.g. 5-6 C17, 5-6 IL-76, 10 An32, 20 Mi-17 & 5 C130J etc in single mission.
