For 48 hours on Monday and Tuesday, combat aircraft Su-30MKI (pictured) will practice hitting targets at high-altitude areas along the border with China.

After taking down the 'enemy' bases on the western frontier, the Indian Air Force's biggest ever and almost real war game, Exercise Gaganshakti, has now moved to the mountainous borders on the Chinese front where the fighter aircraft will carry out strikes against targets in high altitude areas and airdrop troops.

In a humongous effort involving the heavy duty C-17 Globe master, Ilyushin-76, C-130J Super Hercules and the Antonov-32s, the entire focus of the exercise has shifted to the Chinese front now, as in the first phase, the Air Force has tackled the 'threat' from the Pakistan side.

According to sources, it is believed that the two-phased exercise is being carried out under the presumption that the threat initially emanates from the western front and is suppressed through a swift offensive in a short time frame.

In the second phase, it is learnt, the assumption would be that fazed by the crushing defeat of India's western neighbour, the northern adversary also starts offensive operations along the 4,000 kilometer border for which the entire focus of operations of the Air Force is shifted to the eastern front.

"On Monday and Tuesday, for 48 hours, the combat aircraft including the Su-30MKI will practice hitting at targets at high altitude areas along the border with China as locating and hitting them at high altitude is comparatively difficult," a government source told MAIL TODAY.

The radars also find it difficult to pick up hidden targets and the war games would also help the pilots improve their skills in this field, the sources said. During the war games to shift focus on to the mountainous terrain from the desert and plains of the western front, the transport aircraft would carry along the support equipment for the fighter squadrons of Mirage 2000, MiG 29 and Jaguars, while the mobile missile units have also moved swiftly in that region, the sources said.

"One of the biggest achievements of the exercise has been to achieve a high serviceability of 80 per cent in terms of fighter aircraft, which means almost 500 of the more than 600 aircraft fleet of the force is available for offensive operations. This figure is astonishing as it is comparatively lower in peace times," they said.

Air Force officials also credited the support of Hindustan Aeronautics Limited in extending support to achieve such high numbers in terms of serviceability as the public sector unit had deployed its technical teams at forward bases for support.

The Air Force would also deploy helicopters to carry out extensive Inter-Valley Troop Transfer drills, under which troops would be rapidly deployed from one place to other to counter a sudden intrusion by enemy troops in a high mountainous pass.

Sources said in the first phase of the exercise, the aircraft of the Delhi-based Western Air Command and the Gandhinagar-based South Western Air Command clocked 5,000 hours of fighter aircraft flying in three days which is more than the flying they do together in a month.

The exercise started on April 8 and is expected to continue till April 22, during which the force will validate all its warfighting concepts.

IAF conducts drill close to China border

CHINYALISAUR (U’khand): The ongoing nationwide mega-combat exercise of the Indian Air Force (IAF) began in Uttarakhand’s Uttarkashi district today to examine the strategic preparedness of its infrastructure in the area.

Though IAF officials maintained a distance from the media, sources said the exercise — ‘Gagan Shakti’ — began around 6.30 am at Chinyalisaur town, 230km from the Indo-China border.

The first An-32 transport aircraft carrying IAF personnel landed at the Chinyalisaur airstrip around 7.15 am. The aircraft made a second landing at the airstrip at 7.45 am and a third at 8.01 am, the sources said.

The exercise would continue in Chinyalisaur till Sunday, it added.

‘Gagan Shakti’ is said to be the IAF’s biggest such exercise in decades, to check its operational preparedness with a focus on dealing with all possible security challenges, including from China and Pakistan.

The two-week drill started on April 8 and would continue till the 22nd of this month, officials had said.

Last Saturday, the IAF conducted a maritime air operation in the western sea board to check its deep strike capability in the Indian Ocean Region and beyond. (AGENCIES)

Pakistan does not need to launch any war or airforce. Just see exploit the vulnerabilities in Government structure and tug of war happening among departments. And this is what they have been doing with us due to unprofessionalism and lack of discipline and pity issue of jealousy among government employs from eachother.

That's pretty true, but at the same time, isn't it now or never for China?

It wouldn't be that smart on their part to intervene in a conflict between India and Pakistan, but if Pakistan receives a terrible defeat and basically stops being a threat of any kind to India, then India would be able to devote most of its focus to China. Not to mention, we're about to become far more lethal in the near future as our military modernization projects kick in (lots of new artillery guns, more submarines, more modern fighter jets, developed infrastructure on border and new Mountain Striker Corps etc).

On top of that, CPEC would basically be toast, and then there's also the significant matter of (alleged) Chinese military presence in PoK.
If we crush pakistan within 3-5 days, china will never intervene in the war as that will bring in US, Japan and Australia to conflict. Moreover CPEC will than become CIEC and China will reap far bigger dividends from it.

I was very much sure of this during Manmohan era but with Rahulji in command I am not so sure he will be able to resist the temptation to stab the country in back just to see Modi fail. Following few incidents makes me very doubtful of him:

  • Meeting Chinese envoy during Doklam and lying that he didn't.
  • Irresponsibly making controversy about Rafale deal when there is none and thereby slowing down the process.
  • Having secret meeting with Pakistani envoy and lying again.
  • Calling hindus terror a bigger threat than Lashkar e Taiba to US envoy.
  • Clapping and cheering while his home minister declare that he have proof of BJP run terror camps.
  • Supporting the likes of Kanhaiya Kumar, Umar Khalid, Jignesh Mevani all of them directly related to proscribed organisations.
I never had doubt that congress will not stand for country but now I seriously do. Don't be surprised if Akhilesh yadav say Yadav are sent to be killed and Mayawati accuses army of not awarding enough medals for schedule caste.

It is not the same India that it use to be, just 4 years out of power and they are ready to put India on stake to get back and reestablish the same old corrupt eco system.

Gaganshakti 2018: IAF displays might, air chief says ‘we’re shaking the heavens’

The Gaganshakti-2018 exercise seeks to test the IAF’s readiness and stamina for a two-front war with China and Pakistan.

Once again, Dhanoa suggested that the western neighbour was rattled by the sheer scale and complexity of Gaganshakti-2018, despite being notified about the first phase of the exercise in the western sector.

“We have noticed that they (Pakistan) are monitoring Gaganshakti-2018 closely through their airborne sensors (airborne warning and control systems),” the air chief said.

Dhanoa said the IAF jets have recorded a serviceability rate of 80% and flown very long range missions flawlessly. In IAF parlance, serviceability of a fleet refers to how many warplanes are available for missions at any given time.

The exercise has had no glitches so far except a Jaguar fighter veering off the runway at the Bhuj airbase due to bad weather and a few Tejas light combat aircraft developing snags. “Hindustan Aeronautics Limited was able to fix the Tejas problems in less than 12 hours,” Dhanoa said.
Dhanoa sir is brutally honest with Jaguar and Tejas. That's why we need indigenous system in out armed forces, so that the suppliers can respond immediately to any technical problem the forces face.

Happy to see HAL on alert mode and resolving the snag within 12 hours. I hope this issue is not permanent and would not affect the 2nd part of the exercise on the Eastern border as it is very important for LCA to prove its mettle in all the scenario IAF puts it.

IAF hasn't released many pics of LCA yet apart from night operation and few pics from forward base in Gujarat. I hope IAF will use them near eastern border for interception role against simulated PLAAF targets.

We must really appreciate and admire the IAF leadership for this
Whole Idea of this exercise and also making it known to the Enemies

Conceptualising and Implementing these concepts requires enormous skill and ability

IAF will also come to know what were the outcomes and shortcomings if any
can be rectified Before the REAL war takes place

For instance this snags in Tejas that were detected or how Weather can affect the best of plans and efforts

For too long we have only been hearing about the Deficiencies in IAF

It was time for the IAF to show its Strength

IAF Wargame wins praise from State run Chinese Media

The immense scope, dimension and huge effort that has gone into the ongoing Indian Air Force’s (IAF) war exercise Gagan Shakti, possibly IAF’s biggest till date, has drawn grudging but effusive praise from unlikely quarters — the state-run Chinese media.

In China, media reports have to be vetted by the government, so in a way they reflect the government’s stand and line of thought.

A report in a leading news aggregator Zhaizao declares that such large-scale air exercises are at present difficult for any other country except the United States and if India indeed has involved more than 1,100 air force assets then Russia and China will have to change their assessment of India.

The report marvels at India’s ability to involve hundreds of Su-30MKIs and MiG-21s, Jaguars, MiG 27s, and MiG 29s, including Navy MiG-29Ks, LCA fighters, and transport aircraft of various sizes besides helicopters and arming/detection/ refuelling aircraft in the giant exercise which is a “demonstration of the development results of the past 10 years”.

The report, loosely translated from Mandarin, says: “We cannot but affirm India’s progress in these years’ progress. In 2008, the Indian military had announced that the operational availability rate of its domestic Su-30MKI was only 50 per cent, and that after 10 years, it actually reached 90 per cent of the time it could be dispatched…This shows that the Indian military has strengthened its emphasis on maintenance work and other logistic tasks”.

On the fact that about 10,000 ground support personnel working together and more than 3,000 air sorties were being planned, it said: “It also shows that India has established and established a complete logistics system”.

On much-delayed LCA project, the report says that despite being very late, LCA over the last 30 years has produced a bountiful harvest of a very large number of “technicians cultivated and promoted through LCA research and development”.

Besides testing IAF’s war-readiness, the other big objective of Gagan Shakti is to study the logistical sustainability of a “short, intense and swift” war as they are predicted to be in future.

“In terms of scale, magnitude, timeframe, geography and nature of activation of every component of IAF’s fighting machine, Gagan Shakti 2018 is a monumental one where the entire range of IAF assets including light, medium, heavy variants of various aircraft are being used. It is clearly the simulation of a ‘swift, intense and short’ two-front conflict. It is not just an exercise but an actual real-time simulation of a war,” said Air Vice-Marshal Kapil Kak (Retd). It is not the same India that it use to be, just 4 years out of power and they are ready to put India on stake to get back and reestablish the same old corrupt eco system.

This is the first time they got such a drubbing in elections. They are just overreacting to everything. During war time, they will just sit back and allow the govt to do whatever they want, that's what multi-partisan support is about. After the war they will continue playing their game.

India developing destabilising doctrines and technologies, former SPD chief says - Daily Times

ISLAMABAD: India’s expansionist and revisionist mindset is guiding its force posture development that makes war look more likely, said former head of Strategic Plans Division (SPD) Lt Gen (retd) Mazhar Jamil.

He was speaking at a seminar on ‘Indian Force Posture Development’ organised by Strategic Vision Institute (SVI), an Islamabad-based think tank, on Tuesday. The seminar coincided with the fifth anniversary of the founding of the think tank.

The seminar aimed at providing strategic insight into the emerging trends in Indian force posture, shift in India’s nuclear doctrine and its growing nuclear and missile capabilities.

In a statement issued after the event, SVI said it believed that changes in Indian force posture would affect Pakistan, whose threat perception was already India centric. Moreover, the think tank considered that change in Indian nuclear doctrine was alarming as it sought strategic dominance.

“India is pursuing long-term conventional and strategic nuclear force modernisation including the introduction of high-end technologies and advanced systems. India’s conventional force posture has also undergone a significant change moving from Sundarji Doctrine to the dangerous Cold Start Doctrine (CSD), which is a pro-active and aggressive strategy aiming to engage Pakistan in a limited war under nuclear overhang.

“The Indian strategic thought has, for centuries, been focused on an expansionist agenda which to this day is the muse for its power maximization, including the force posture developments. Our neighbor fancies itself as a regional hegemon, with designs of grandeur,” Gen Jamil said.

“This notion has become so ingrained in their revisionist thinking that all their developments – be these conventional or nuclear – are geared towards changing the status quo and find space for war,” he said, adding that India was developing destabilising doctrines and technologies that made war more imminent.

Comparing Indian strategic thinking with that of Pakistan, the former SPD chief said Pakistan’s strategic culture, in contrast, “has always been characterised by restrained responses, pursuit of conflict resolution and closing the space for war.” He said Pakistan’s force posture development was in response to the destabilising developments in the neighbourhood. But, he, at the same time, underscored that Pakistan would not enter an arms race.

Strategic restraint, he maintained, was more stabilising than strategic competition. He was of the view that peace and stability in the region was possible if India agreed to mutual restraint and conflict resolution.

Gen Jamil recalled that Pakistan had proposed to India Strategic Restraint Regime with three interlocking elements of nuclear restraint, conventional arms balance and conflict resolution. However, he regretted that Pakistan’s “hand of friendship” always encountered India’s “aggressive strategic culture”.

He urged India to shun belligerence and war-mongering and resolve disputes peacefully. “I am sure that Pakistan will meet India halfway in peace efforts,” he added.

SVI president Dr Zafar Iqbal Cheema, on this occasion, said Indian National Security Strategy (NSS) objective was to maintain an overwhelming conventional and nuclear weapons capability by developing strategic and conventional offensive capabilities for full spectrum of military conflicts.

The main instruments of India’s force posture were deterrence, coercion and coercive diplomacy, he said. “The Joint Indian Armed Forces Doctrine contemplates the use of military force aimed at destruction, disruption and constraining its adversaries in South Asia, with specific concentration on Pakistan,” he added.

“Disruption and constraint also aim at sea denial; including blockade of adversary’s sea-routes. In low intensity operations, Indian Armed Forces Doctrine visualizes carrying-out surgical strikes,” he said.
