Extremely useful points on the changing nature of warfare from field experience in ukraine by american security officer(retd) on a point to point basis with slides.
Lessons for india too here.Astonished how effective the russians are being with a budget less than ours.

Lessons for IA -

1.Need for a datalinked layered air defence system instead of depending on fighter support.(already being done)

2.Need a new MANPAD with multi-channel optical seeker(being done with Igla-s,though would have prefered the newer verba)

3.Drones need to be integrated at company level for battalions and battery level for artillery.(Not sure on state of integration in infantry, have been integrated in artillery-not sure at which level)

4.MLRS accounted for 80% of ukraine casualities. In plains MLRS is king if used with thermobaric and sub-munitions.
(Pinaka mk2 is welcome step, unsure about state of submunitions.Need thermobaric warheads on all MLRS.Need to increase MLRS numbers in RAPIDS,strike corps formations and in ladakh )

5.Need integrated EW capability in individual frontline battalions at least.
2 systems can be of interest if they are available for export ,the rtut-bm EW meant for exploding incoming MLRS missiles and artillery shells. This can be important in both plains as well as LOC.
Krasukha-4 which gave USA headaches in syria is another - can be used to guard priority targets such as S-400 batteries as it jams radar guided munitions such as HAARM,it can jam GPS signal of drones, can jam AWACS and at closer ranges even ground radar.

6.Need the new FICV to have tank level protection to survive modern battlefields.Should have comparable protection to T-15 armata FICV.If that proves too costly,at least equip the mechanized formations on the china border with T-15 purchase, leaving rest of the thousands with indigenous option.

7.Something like Sprut-SD or new variant under development can be purchased(or built by us) for deployment on china border. It would solve light tank problem.18 tonne weight.Amphibious, airliftable, able to use same ammo as t-90,able to launch tank missiles,125 mm gun, protection upto 20 mm cannonfire.

It's impossible for FICV to have tank level protection. But the FRCV will see the development of a heavy ICV on the lines of the T-15. The FICV will have to depend on an APS.

There was a plan to buy light tanks, 100 tracked and 200 wheeled, but it was put on hold. With China inducting its own light tank, now India is interested in one as well.

Rather than the Sprut, I'd like to see the development of a two-man light tank with an unmanned turret. This way most of the armour will go towards crew protection in the hull and still keep the tank light. Of course, it will need a sufficiently advanced APS as well.

FRCV will see the development of a light tank also.

"The only thing differentiating war from maneuvers is the last stage on the last day. The concentration of forces and the logistics is the same for both.” Lt.Col. Ben-Porat, AMAN, on lessons from Soviet repression of the Prague Spring (quoted in Rabinovich’s ‘The Yom Kippur War’)
