Previously, the plan was to construct 6 NGD but now it has changed to 8 which will be built in 2 phase with both phases having 4 destroyers each.

Also, P-17B will also be executed with same number i.e. 7 ships.

MDL is expecting,

7 P-17B for Rs 60,000 cr
8 NGD for Rs 80,000 cr

Repeat kalvari can be with or without API. So, no full clarity on cost. Order can be expected in 6 months.

Korea's have informed in writing that they are withdrawing from the P75I project. Thus MDL tied up with TKMS.

MDL is working with NDB for Project 76 SSK design.

Although its all hypothetical, my 2 cents on this:

Our sanctioned strength for destroyers is 15 and for frigates it is 24. By 2027, we will be having 10 DDG:
03 P-15
03 P-15A
04 P-15B

And 23 FFG:
03 P11356 Batch 1
03 P-16A
03 P11356 Batch 2
03 P-17
07 P-17A
04 P11356 Batch 3/4

We will be short of 5 DDG and 1 FFG to reach the sanctioned numbers.

We will be replace 03 P-16A and 03 P11356 Batch 01 frigates with 07 P-17B and reach the total number of 24 FFG by ~2035.

03 P-17
03 P11356 Batch 02
07 P-17A
04 P11356 Batch 03/04
07 P-17B

By the same time, we will also be inducting 04 NGD in first phase to reach the number 14 then we will add another 04 in second phase to replace the 03 P-15 and meet the requirement of 15 DDG by ~2037.

03 P-15A
04 P-15B
04 NGD Batch 01
04 NGD Batch 02

Is there a sanctioned strength as such?

They need to replace old Rajput class and P15 starting from 2032. Thus the 8 NGD. Numbers make sense.

In frigates, P-16A and P11356 B1 have enough life left. Commissioned around 2003-04. Thus life till 2038.

P-17B are not considered as replacement IMO. But more of capability addition.

Vision 2035-40 is something like ~25 frigates and 15 destroyers.

MDL is undertaking a very ambitious programme to indigenize almost 8,000 components of what goes into a submarine, WDB (Warship Design Bureau) is also working on the indigenisation of the submarine under the project P-76. MDL and WDB will be working on these aspects jointly. While referring to the midget submarine programme the CMD stated “This is a research & development project undertaken by MDL, primarily taken for the purpose of indigenisation, this will be a multi role submarine, which can be deployed for special operations, oceanography, and tourist purposes…touching water by end of 24…all components will be indigenous”. MDL successfully tested the pressure hull for the submarine in July 2023.

Someone posted stuff from defense matrix thread to the other forum previously. Possibly some lurker from any two forums.

P-16As will begin to retire by early 2030s, if not sooner. Their predecessors (Godavari-class) served only for 32-34 years and the build (type of steel & techniques) was fairly similar between 16 and 16A so I would expect Brahmaputra-class to begin retirements by around 2032.

Though there are 1 or 2 outliers (Ladnyy refit & a couple that were built for Coast Guard, who obviously don't operate them to same standards), the typical retirement age for the Russian-operated Krivak-I & II models is somewhere between 25 and 30 years. I don't think they made any metallurgical breakthroughs in the Krivak-III so I'd again expect 30-ish years of service. So the B1 Talwars too will begin retirements in the early to mid 2030s as well.

Between the two frigate classes, that's 6 hulls going out.

Of course, another factor to consider is how desperate the Indian Navy would be at that time. We CAN surely operate them much longer if need be, but only if we're out of options. The Rajput-class retirements for example would have begun much earlier had the P-15A/B programs weren't so terribly delayed.

If the 17A/B programs manage to get them hulls in the hand soon enough, I doubt we'd have to wait till 2038 to start seeing the retirements happen.

All you need to know about INS Vindhyagiri

1) Vindhyagiri, named after the mountain range in Karnataka, is the sixth ship of the Project 17A program, as per PTI reports.

2) These warships are follow-ons of the Project 17 Class Frigates (Shivalik Class), with improved stealth features, advanced weapons and sensors and platform management systems.

4) ‘Vindhyagiri’, a technologically advanced Frigate, pays a befitting tribute to the distinguished service of its predecessor, the erstwhile INS Vindhyagiri, the Leander Class ASW Frigate.

5) The old Vindhyagiri in its nearly 31 years of service from July 1981 to Jun 2012, had witnessed various challenging operations and multinational exercises, PTI reported.

6) The newly christened Vindhyagiri stands as a symbol of India's determination to embrace its rich naval heritage while propelling itself towards a future of indigenous defence capabilities.

7) Under the Project 17A program, a total of four ships by Mazagon Dock Ltd (MDL) and three ships by GRSE are under construction. The project's first five ships have been launched by the MDL and GRSE between 2019 and 2022.

8) Project 17A ships have been designed in-house by the Indian Navy's Warship Design Bureau, the pioneer organization for all warship design activities, the Navy said as quoted by PTI.

9) A substantial 75 per cent of the orders for equipment and systems of Project 17A ships are from indigenous firms, including Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), the Navy added.

10) The launch of Vindhyagiri is an apt testament to the incredible progress our nation has made in building a self-reliant naval force.

This year as of now, the Indian Navy has signed a total of 4 major naval deals for procuring 25 naval vessels at a total cost of 41,649.09 crore.

1. Cadet Training Ships = 03 for ₹3,108.09 crore
2. Next Generation Missile Vessels = 06 for ₹9,805 crore
3. Next Generation OPVs = 11 for ₹9,781 crore
4. Fleet Support Ships = 05 for ₹19000 crore
