Cabinet approves Indian Human Spaceflight Initiative: Gaganyaan Programme

Two unmanned & one manned flight planned

First manned flight in 40 months

Estimates for Phase-I expenditure- Rs 9023 Crores



The Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has approved the Gaganyaan Programme with demonstration of Indian Human Spaceflight capability to low earth orbit for a mission duration ranging from one orbital period to a maximum of seven days. A human rated GSLV Mk-lll will be used to carry the orbital module which will have necessary provisions for sustaining a 3-member crew for the duration of the mission. The necessary infrastructure for crew training, realization of flight systems and ground infrastructure will be established to support the Gaganyaan Programme. ISRO will collaborate extensively with National agencies, laboratories, academia and industry to accomplish the Gaganyaan Programme objectives.



Expenditure:

The total fund requirement for the Gaganyaan Programme is within Rs.10,000 crore and includes cost of technology development, flight hardware realization and essential infrastructure elements. Two unmanned flights and one manned flight will be undertaken as part of Gaganyaan Programme.

lmplementation Strategy and Targets:

Gaganyaan Programme will be a national effort in collaboration with Industry, Academia and other scientific agencies and laboratories as stake holders along with ISRO. ISRO will be responsible for realizing the flight hardware through Industry. National agencies, laboratories and Academia will participate in crew training, human life science technology development initiatives as well as design reviews. First human space flight demonstration is targeted to be completed within 40 months from the date of sanction. Prior to this, two unmanned flights in full complement will be carried out to gain confidence on the technology and mission management aspects.



Impact:

  • The programme is expected to spur research and development within the country in niche science and technology domains.
  • Huge potential for technology spinoffs in areas such as medicine, agriculture, industrial safety, pollution, waste management, water and food resource management etc.
  • Human spaceflight programme will provide a unique micro-gravity platform in space for conducting experiments and test bed for future technologies.
  • The programme is expected to give impetus to economic activities within the country in terms of employment generation, human resource development and enhanced industrial capabilities.
  • Human Spaceflight capability will enable India to participate as a collaborating partner in future Global space exploration initiatives with long term national benefits.


Background:

ISRO has completed the development of launch vehicle GSLV Mk-lll which has the necessary payload capability to launch a 3-member crew module in low earth orbit. ISRO has also tested the crew escape system which is an essential technology for human space flight. The aerodynamic characterization of crew module has b3een completed as part of GSLV Mk-lll X mission flight. Elements of life support system and Space suit also have been realized and tested. In addition, the orbital & re-entry mission and recovery operations have been flight demonstrated in Space Capsule Re-entry experiment (SRE) mission. ISRO has developed and demonstrated most of the baseline technologies essential for undertaking human spaceflight mission. Globally also, there is a renewed interest in undertaking manned exploration initiatives.
 
Is it necessary ?

Isn't it cheaper to collaborate with friendly countries ? Except china we can collaborate with every space nation.

Why nt utilize it for commercial purpose and earn some money .

I am not even mentioning to spend in other sectors but in ISRO itself .

It's not about saving money, it's about attracting talent pool and showing off to the world, so we have to do it alone.

We would be receiving considerable help from the Russians. All those crores in Kudankulam wasn't out of love for the Russians, as you know.

Did what exactly? Kudankulam payments have classified relation with our nuclear submarine program, not the space program.

No groundbreaking tech is required to send some humans to LEO for a few days.

As far as I know, this is a forum of amateurs mostly. PKS, for all his faults & idiosyncrasies, has a better track record. Of course, this is only as far as I know.

I don't blame you, son. You're an optimist. The programme was initiated, as you would know, when IG, was alarmed at the entry of the US 7 th fleet into the Bay of Bengal. The rest has been a series of trials & errors culminating in the GoI signing Kundankulum-1, where the design and hand holding as far as manufacturing goes for S 1 & S 2 onwards goes.

Ahmedabad: The countdown to India’s ambitious manned spaceflight mission Gaganyaan has begun and ISRO scientists are at breakneck speeds to achieve the mission’s December 2021 deadline. India’s indigenously developed astronaut crew escape suit, bearing the ‘Made in Vadodara’ tag is the first on ISRO’s wardrobe. The suit is 20% lighter and one hundredth of the cost of its foreign counterpart. The astronaut crew escape suit will see the best of both American and Russian space suits. The last time an Indian wore a space suit was in 1984, when wing commander Rakesh Sharma flew aboard Russian Soyuz T-11.


Sure Safety, a Vadodara-based industrial safety equipment manufacturer has designed the suit from scratch after collaborating with ISRO’s Space Applications Centre (SAC), Ahmadabad. The firm gave the first glimpse of the space suit at the Futuristic Technology Exhibition inaugurated on Thursday at the Science City. Nishith Dand, managing director of the firm, told TOI that trials for testing the material under lab conditions are almost over, including vacuum chambers tests. “Right from the communications, bio-sensors measuring body temperatures, oxygen and carbon-monoxide levels and to pressure management systems, all technology has been developed indigenously. We are the fourth company in the world to produce a suit for astronauts,” he said. Other feature of the suit are a flexible hood zipper, touch screen sensitive gloves, utility pockets, air diverters and light weight shoes. The space suit operates at temperature ranging from minus 40°C to 80°C.


Talking about how the suit fares compared to its counterparts used by space agencies in the US and Russia, Dand mentioned that the suit is about 20% lighter while maintaining high standards of safety vis-à-vis fire, water and pressure changes. “We can say that functionality-wise, it’s a cross between the suits used by Russia and the US in terms of life support system, oxygen/air management and functionality,” he added. The suit will also be nuclear, biological, chemical (NBC) resistant.
