Gaganyaan mission: IAF to pick 10 potential astronauts in 2 months, Isro chief says
The Indian Air Force (IAF) will “screen and select 10 potential crew members for the country’s first manned space mission in two months”. Indian Space Research Organisation (Isro) chairman K Sivan told TOI that the space agency will choose the final three astronauts from the ten people who the IAF would train.
The Isro chief said, “We have an agreement with the IAF for crew training at Isro’s Human Space Flight Centre in Bengaluru. IAF will screen around 10 crew members for the mission. This screening and selection will happen within one to two months. Isro will finally choose three members from these 10 crew members for the human spaceflight mission.”
Preparations for the country’s first manned mission to space are in full swing as Isro recently held its first meeting of the national advisory council (NAC), where representatives of all organisations and institutes involved in the Gaganyaan project participated. The agency also tested CE-20 engine, meant for the upper stage of human-rated GSLV MK-III, which will be carrying Indian astronauts to space.
Speaking to TOI, Sivan said, “In the NAC meet on June 8, Air Vice-Marshal R G K Kapoor, assistant chief of air staff operations (space), Rear Admiral D S Gujarl, assistant chief of naval staff, Defence Research and Development Organisation director G Satheesh Reddy, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited chairman and managing director R Madhavan and veterans of different institutes attended the meeting. All these agencies will play crucial roles in the mission. Whilel the IAF will handle crew selection and training, DRDO will provide the life support system for crew and Navy will help in recovering the human capsule once it re-enters the atmosphere and splashes down in sea.”

The Isro chairman said the meeting, also attended by former Indian astronaut Rakesh Sharma, discussed the overall plan, including crew training. “The NAC is mandated to meet once in six months to review the preparedness of the mission (scheduled to be launched before or by 2021). But we have decided to initially hold the review meeting once in three months in order to streamline the process,” he said.
On the Chandrayaan-2 mission, Sivan said “the integration of GSLV Mk III has been going on at Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota for quite some time. However, the lunarcraft will be on display at Bengaluru’s U R Rao Satellite Centre for the media for the next two days before being taken to Sriharikota for integration with the GSLV rocket”.​

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM : After the successful launch of GSLV-MkIII carrying the lander and rover to unravel the mystery of the moon, the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC), which focuses on achieving excellence in launch vehicle technology for the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), here is bracing for Gaganyaan, the ambitious human space flight programme, which includes the crew escape system. It would be the same GSLV-MkIII version that would carry the vyomanauts to space.

However, the vehicle will have to be reconfigured to take astronauts to space by ensuring triple modular redundancy or more as it cannot afford a technical snag like the one that happened in Chandrayaan-2.

As per the design, the vehicle will have the three stages — solid, liquid and cryogenic — and above it would be the crew module carrying the astronauts for Gaganyaan. The three-stage vehicle would work in the same way as it performed in the Chandrayaan mission, according to VSSC officials.

However, the crew escape system, an emergency escape measure designed to quickly pull the crew module along with the astronauts to a safe distance from the launch vehicle in the event of an aborted launch, will have to be integrated after holding test flights.

According to VSSC director S Somanath, there would be some advanced intelligence equipment on board of the vehicle which ensure cent per cent redundancy and there would be two unmanned flights before the final flight with vyomanauts. “We hope the vehicle can be readied by reconfiguring it in a year,” he added. The unmanned vehicle would be able to cushion the shocks and vibrations to some extent like an aircraft as the human being to be taken to space should be able to withstand them.

Further, the advanced equipment in the vehicle must be able to find its faults and rectify them during its flight. ISRO successfully flight-tested the crew escape system on July 5, 2018, the first in a series of tests to qualify the system, which is a critical technology relevant for human spaceflight.

This is an old plan, but a very workable one. Back in that time the GSLV Mk2 was the most powerful rocket we had, now its the mark3. The plan was to use an extended cryogenic upper stage(C60) with 67tons of propellant called EDS to do a direct lunar orbital insertion. After the orbital insertion, the service module engines will be used for a safe soft landing. The same service module will be used for getting to LLO from where a Hohmann transfer can be staged. The SM will use up remaining fuel in earth orbit and re-entry phase and will be jettisoned. The CM will open parachutes and land on water.

Not bad given the time when we planned this we had no better rockets. It will probably be done not long after Gaganyaan's success. But as always we need that Semi-cryo engine and we better get to making extended tanks for the CE-20 engine.

No, its not the Mk2. Its a proposed rocket modeled on the Mk2. The Mk2 was the most powerful rocket then. So the proposed rocket for lunar manned mission was modeled after the Mk2.
Just like how the Gaganyaan mission now is based on the most powerful rocket of today.

But other than the Mk2 based rocket, you can see that the CM and SM design has remained the same for the Gaganyaan mission.

Roscosmos Director General Dmitry Rogozin met with the Indian delegation

Roscosmos Director General Dmitry Rogozin held a working meeting with National Security Advisor to the Prime Minister of India Ajit Doval in Moscow.

The meeting was mainly dedicated to the questions that might be discussed at the Russia-India top-level meeting, which is planned during the Eastern Economic Forum on September 4-6, 2019. During the nearest meetings the sides intend to discuss the Russo-Indian cooperation perspectives in the sphere of the piloted spaceflights, as well as satellite navigation and engine technology.

Rogozin and Doval took a favorable view of the work according to the contract between Glavkosmos and the Indian Space Research Organisation to select and prepare four Indian cosmonauts at the Yuri Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center.

The sides also discussed possible Indian crewed flight carrier rocket aerodynamic tests, as well as piloted vehicle and crew rescue system. It is planned to reach an agreement until the end of August 2019. Moreover, Russia and India are expecting to negotiate the contracts to supply windows, crew seats and spacesuits for the Indian crewed mission.

Four representatives of India will undergo a selection procedure and training at the Russian Cosmonaut Training Center, the State Space Corporation Roscosmos reported on Wednesday.

Tenders from HSFC have now begun to come out. It seems things are rolling according to plan.

Cabin Pressure Control System(CPCS) :

The cabin pressure control system (CPCS) is a sub system of environment control and life support system. The main function of CPCS is to monitor and control the total pressure of cabin and partial pressure of O2 within the specified limits for a cabin volume of 8 m³ and to supply pure O2 to flight suit in case of emergency. CPCS also provides O2 + N2 mixture (30:70) from a stored tank for one time re-pressurising of the cabin in case of fire or major decontamination of cabin leading to emergency de-pressurisation. The CPCS system is to be designed for two fault tolerance in all aspects.

The Scope of work is to develop, realise, test, assemble, supply and commission the engineering model of Cabin Pressure Control System (CPCS) and demonstrate the working of CPCS in closed loop mode using O2 compatible components (in full).

Primary O2 storage: 4× 35 litre tank at 21 MPa
O2/N2 mixture for a cabin re-pressurization: 1× 35 litre tank at 21 MPa
Secondary O2 storage (emergency): 2× 14 litre tank at 20 MPa

Thermal and Humidity Control System(THCS) :

The main function of thermal and humidity control system is to maintain the chamber (volume: 8 m³) temperature within 23±3°C (Nominal) and relative humidity 30 to 70%. The chamber temperature need to be maintained @ 18°C under certain situation.

The Scope of work is to develop, realise, test, assemble, supply and commission the engineering model of Thermal and Humidity Control System (THCS) hardware with thermal and humidity loading arrangement in the chamber and heat rejection arrangement in the chiller.

Gaganyaan: Russia offers India semi-cryogenic engine technology
CHENNAI : India and Russia are discussing a wide range of cooperation in the space sector with the latter's offer of its semi-cryogenic engine technology and critical components for India's human space capsule, Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO)Chairman K. Sivan said on Sunday.

"We are in discussions with the Russian space agency on various aspects and nothing has been firmed up. What has been finalised is the agreement to train the Indian cosmonauts by Russia for our human space mission Gaganyaan," Sivan told IANS in an interview here.

"Russia is offering its semi-cryogenic rocket engine technology to India under the `Make-in-India' programme. The rocket engines could be made in India and used in our rockets," Sivan said.

In a recently statement, Russian state-run space corporation Roscosmos said the two countries will discuss cooperation in the sphere of piloted space flights, satellite navigation and engine technology.

Sivan also said the two countries are also discussing the setting up of ground stations in each other's countries to enhance the accuracy of their satellite navigation signals.

"We want to set up our ground station for our NavIC system in Russia. Russia, in turn, wants to set up a ground station in India for its satellite navigation system. The Russian ground station will be in Bengaluru while ours is likely to be in Moscow," Sivan said.

Queried about the sourcing of critical components for India's human space mission 'Gaganyaan' from Russia, Sivan replied: "The discussions are on. Nothing has been finalised. We have to see whether we need to buy their components. The components have to be suitable for us."

Sivan also said the ISRO's focus currently is on India's moon landing mission Chandrayaan-2.

The Chandrayaan-2 spacecraft is now in the lunar orbit and ISRO will have to carry out three more orbital manoeuvres to bring it to an altitude of 100 km from the moon surface.

Thereafter, the lander 'Vikram' will separate and will soft land on the moon's South Pole on September 7 around 1.55 a.m.

Again, Semi cryo from Russia? Is this series of offers and news arising out of ignorance of media or are they kite flying by Russians to break us out of Project Jasmine / RD 810.. Anyways Gagnyaan mission is in no way related to Semicryo engine.
