Embraer and Mahindra Group Forge Strategic Alliance to Introduce the C-390 Millennium to India

New Delhi, October 17, 2025 – In a bold step towards India’s Atmanirbhar Bharat vision, Embraer Defense & Security and Mahindra Group, have signed a landmark Strategic Cooperation Agreement (SCA) to advance the C-390 Millennium solution for the Indian Air Force’s Medium Transport Aircraft (MTA) programme. This agreement was inked alongside the inauguration of Embraer’s national office in Aerocity, New Delhi.

The agreement builds upon the Memorandum of Understanding signed in February 2024 at the Embassy of Brazil in New Delhi, deepening the scope of cooperation to include joint marketing, industrialisation and developing India as a hub for the C-390 Millennium. Since the signing, the C-390 Millennium aircraft has further increased its operator base globally.

Embraer and Mahindra Group will work closely with stakeholders in the country and engage with India’s military and aerospace ecosystem to identify opportunities for local manufacturing, assembly facilities, supply chain and MRO activities. The long-term ambition is to position India as a manufacturing and support hub for the C-390 Millennium aircraft, serving both domestic and regional requirements.

This partnership unites Brazil’s world-class aerospace innovation with India’s manufacturing prowess and contributes to the strengthening of ties between the two nations while positioning India as a potential hub for the C-390 Millennium aircraft in the region.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Bosco da Costa Junior, President & CEO of Embraer Defense & Security said, “The agreement is a significant milestone in our relationship with Mahindra Group. India’s aerospace industry is dynamic and world-class, and together we aim to deliver the most advanced and reliable military transport solution to the Indian Air Force. This partnership is more than an aerospace deal – it reflects our commitment to ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ and the growing friendship between Brazil and India.”

Vinod Sahay, Member of Group Executive Board, Mahindra Group said: “The C-390 Millennium is unmatched in capability, efficiency, and versatility. By deepening our collaboration with Embraer, together we will ensure that the C-390 Millenium for the IAF’s MTA campaign will not only contribute to India’s security and aspirations but also supports the ‘Make in India’ philosophy and further self-reliance.”

The C-390 Millennium is the most modern military transport aircraft in its class and can carry more payload (26 tons) compared to other medium-sized military transport aircraft and flies faster (470 knots) and farther. It can perform a wide range of missions including cargo and troop transport, airdrops, medical evacuation, search and rescue], firefighting, and humanitarian operations. It can operate from temporary or unpaved runways. The aircraft can also be configured for air-to-air refuelling, both as a tanker and as a receiver. The current fleet, in operation, has demonstrated a mission completion rate of more than 99%, highlighting exceptional productivity in its category.

Already selected by air forces in Brazil, Portugal, Hungary, the Netherlands, Austria, South Korea, Czech Republic, Sweden, Slovakia, Lithuania and an undisclosed customer, the C-390 Millennium has the capability, versatility and performance to serve India’s strategic needs.

Untill PMO and IAF want an indigenous 20 ton MTA effort, we shouldn't delay the decision here.

Embraer says the Brazilian government has reduced its committed KC-390 purchase by one aircraft, with 18 firm orders now on the books for the military transport from that customer. The contract adjustment, agreed in August, was revealed by the Brazilian aircraft-maker in its Oct. 21 third-quarter (Via aviation week)

Earlier the contract was reduced from 28 to 19, and now this

This is basically an elaborate version of what HAL isn't & why is EMBRAER one of the leading commercial aircraft mfgs in the world.

Secondly I wonder why Mahindra wasn't chosen by EMBRAER to partner it for the FAL especially since the two are in a JV to mfg the C-390 in India & in the light of this recent development is the JV going to hold ?

I'm not too sanguine Adani has either the bandwidth or the vision to emerge as an independent commercial aircraft mfg after absorbing tech from EMBRAER in the future or even take it over as some members including myself speculated down the road .

Perhaps the closeness of the Adani group to power & the fact it didn't pose a significant threat in future informed this decision by EMBRAER to go in with it.

Embraer (NYSE: EMBJ; B3: EMBJ3) and Hindalco Industries Limited have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to conduct exploratory activities to assess potential business opportunities in India. The joint action aims to identify possibilities in aerospace grade aluminum raw material manufacturing to support Embraer’s industrial initiatives while strengthening the company’s commitment to the Make in India ambition.

“This joint action reinforces our focus to identifying local partners that can become our suppliers and, in doing so, accelerate the development of the Indian industrial base,” said Roberto Chaves, Executive Vice President of Global Procurement and Supply Chain at Embraer. “The initiative enhances Embraer’s engagement to advancing the aerospace ecosystem in India, creating long term value across the entire supply chain”.

The signing of the MoU comes at a time when Embraer is steadily expanding its presence in India and maintaining active dialogue with local industry leaders and government stakeholders. Throughout this evaluation cycle, the company assessed a broad spectrum of industrial capabilities in the country, including aerostructure assembly, machining, metal forming, composites, wiring systems, and hardware and software development.

Damn ! How the wheels of fortune turn ?!

5-6 years ago on this very forum we were discussing how HAL could take over EMBRAER after their take over by Boeing ran into the ground with the latter backing off & the Brazilian government had to bail out a cash strapped EMBRAER .

Today Boeing's reputation is in the pits & the USAF is actively considering inducting the C-390 .

Obviously the Americans would never induct the A-400M - a le Francais product which is actually the superior product here, isn't it sweetie at least not under Carrot Top ! Le Francais members may take note.

Meanwhile EMBRAER is making hay while the sun shines. Good on them. They've got a real blockbuster product on their hands.

Thank you for your attention to the matter sweetie ! @Innominate
