Mine sweeper TURIA (M34) of Spanish Navy ran aground off La Manga seaside, Cartagena, Alboran sea, reportedly 0n Aug 27. the ship was deployed in recovering wreck of C-101 Air Force fighter jet, which crashed two days ago. TURIA was operating underwater unmanned apparatus, and grounded on rocky bed, sustaining some 10-meter long hull breach. several compartments were flooded, crew abandoned the ship. Navy plans to patch the breach, pump out water and tow TURIA to Cartagena.
Mine sweeper TURIA (M34), Spanish Navy, commissioned 2000, displacement 585 tons, complement 41, armament Oerlikon antiaircraft guns.

What happening to European ships ? A lot of accidents recently. Wasn't there a Norwegian frigate that partially sunk ? And a German ship catching fire ?

Cannot say about Spanish or German, but professional navies like France, UK, USA, Italy actually have much higher Utilisation of their assets.

And when you use something more, there are more chances of going a lot of things wrong.

Even the Japanese.

What about us ? We do have a lot of accidents ourselves, although accident rates have reduced substantially over the years. Coincidentally, Navy's deployment rate now is the highest ever for peace time duties. Its not just utilisation rates, its safe practices & procedures, equipment use and handling and of course luck.

I wonder how we compare in utilisation rates with other navies. Have any idea ?

Measures are always taken, lessons are learnt. But accidents do happen.

The uk nuke sub fleet had more than a dozen minor/major incidents in over 3-4 years, so accidents do happen. We try to learn from them and take precautions.

It's this where joint operations with French and sub Training in Russia help us to train for things which may go wrong. They have far bigger list of things which may go wrong you see...

As for Operational rates, we are fine, if not too good.

Our one P15A along with 1 OPV has been in gulf for more than a month now, our one Talwar class is in Europe/west Africa for quite a long time now, even our new OPVs of Coast guard spend quite a lot time at sea.

I meant to ask what fraction of our ships are out in the sea ? How does that compare to other Navies like say the Japanese ?

Other than the ships in routine maintenance, we normally maintain over 80% serviceability.

It's nothing abnormal to be honest. European nations, especially North and Western European, are more transparent and visible when it comes to maritime mishaps, so the public not only hears about incidents, but also pays attention to the likes of Germany or Russia - who catches at least one ship on fire every week.

You don't often hear about crashes from South or Central America because these countries aren't as high profile to the world's citizens. China is less transparent and though we know there was a recent collision between a PLAN ship and a Taiwanese cargo vessel, it's not because of China leaking the news and we still don't know what ship was involved. Russia changes its story everyday, but OSINT groups like HiSutton tend to work out the details in quick fashion and rather accurately.

HiSutton was been instrumental in determining the fate of Losharik, a Russian nuclear-powered special missions sub that caught fire while at sea, tracking the submarine's movements, along with base activities that when combined, provide a clearer picture of the events surrounding Losharik then you'll ever get from Russia itself.

Geography plays a big part too. Much of Europe's waters are highly congested and dotted with islands or shallow waters, such as in the Baltic. The North Sea is notorious for its horrible weather, being considered the worst for sea state and conditions on Earth, and the further north you go the worse things tend to get as snow and ice also start to formate near the Barents Sea and Arctic, which are frequently traveled routes.

This is normal.

Ship utilization rate among North and Western European nations is extremely high, so there's a lot of potential for accidents when you're at sea more often then not. That's why the American incident rate is higher then say, Cuba. More vessels and a much heavier work load, despite operating in the same environment in the Western Atlantic.

If you could post some pics of major surface combatants of the Norwegian Navy with proper identification, that would be great.

Germans are not having a good time recently atleast. Having just 1 Type 212 serviceable, only few dozen Typhoons combat ready.

Extremely low serviceablilty, lack of spares are causing great problems in German Armed forces.

They have quite a few problems with their new F125 frigate too (its comparable to size of Kolkata and is armed just guns, good ones, but just guns, no SAM...)

KNM Helge Ingstad is going to be scrapped and replaced, unfortunately. The cost of repairs are just too high and the damage is extensive.

Which is strange considering I was in the Norwegian Air Force. You can take the Norwegian out of the sea, but you can't make then care about anything other than ships and sailing... I think that's how the phrase goes.

Top heavy, overweight and under-armed. Germany's getting too soft. Need a good invasion of Poland to get them to take their defence procurement seriously again. Gorgeous ships though.

Still make a great product though. We bought German rifles, submarines and tanks, and I highly recommend them.

That's sad. She is a beautiful ship. Don't like the oversized mast though, that is bigger than the MF-STAR mast on the Kolkata class. Too big for my liking.

Well to be fair you did post a lot about Norwegian F-35s & F-16s too.
