United States Navy (USN) : News & Discussions

It's starting to look more & more like the entirely impractical 'wunderwaffe' prestige projects that Nazi Germany was pursuing right before they gave up the ghost.

It's probably more the case that leaving a ship stationary in port is a risk based on recent learning.

The article you posted hints at operating across the vastness of the Pacific.

Most of the navy is always stationary in port. Only a quarter to a third are put to sea at any one time.

I seriously hope the admirals and navy in general delay laying down any hulls as much as possible til Trump is out of office. If they're smart they can use some of the development funds and tech towards another flight of burkes or whatever the next generaiton ddx winds up being.

Rather it's possible the US is preparing for a world where they do not have as much access to overseas bases.
I'd expect to see more hospital ships and the ship expeditionary bases ordered. I guess if Trump and his ilk are serious about disengaging from the Eastern hemisphere then it's all a moot point.

This is just the start. It's not something that can be done by one administration alone, and it's only possible if the Republicans come back to power again in 2028 and maintain that over one or two more terms.

Looking at the schedule posted, only 1 ship will be ordered in 2028. One more each in 2030 and 31 and then 1 every alternate year after that. That means only 1 ship is practically guaranteed. So even the navy's planned it in a way only the next admin can make or break the program.

Hell, I bet Trump will be really happy if only 1 ship is made and it's called "USS Trump" and is considered the best ship in the world.

So having more of it at sea is better.

So it can outrun subs.

Outrun diesel subs? Even the diesel/turbine-powered combatants can do that.

Outrun nuke subs? Not happening. The battleship can sustain high speed, but so can the chaser. Combine that with the sub's inherent advantage of stealth, I'm putting my money on the SSN every single time.

It's a prestige project, no two ways about it. It will be cancelled by the next administration, I can say that with above 99% certainty.

Given the recent track record of US surface combatant programs (Zumwalt, LCS, Constellation, DDGX), even if this program wasn't the exorbitant abomination it is, the probability of cancellation would have been above 75% in any case.

What's more impressive is Trump named it after himself.

That's pretty much par for the course at this point ain't it?

Even the F-47 is so named cuz Trump is now the 47th President.

Battleship is only partially submerged and has the same propulsive power as a Gerald Ford Class carrier. It will be faster than the nuke subs without a shadow of a doubt. Probably around 40+kts.

It's a CPS launch platform, can carry 36 of them in 12 VPMs.

The USS Long Beach's 2 x C1W reactors put out a combined ~400 MWth & about 60 MW of shaft-horsepower equivalent. If the Trump-class uses a single A1B (two would be unnecessary given the improvements in each reactor's output) it would have an output of ~700 MWth & about 130 MW of shaft-horsepower (Ford-class has 260 MW of shp due to 2 x A1Bs).

So the old Long Beach nuclear cruiser had 46% of the Trump's shp, but it also displaced only <44% as much as the Trump (15,500 tons vs 35,000+ tons).

Long Beach could do ~30+ knots. No way Trump is doing 40+. Even if possible for short bursts of flank speed, remember that SSN speeds are highly classified and they can do bursts as well. The Russian SSNs like Yasen or even going back to Sierra are known to do 35+ knots and that's just the unclassified figure.

Zumwalt is also a CPS platform now. Doesn't make that program anymore viable than what it was before.

If a platform to launch CPS is what you want, there are far cheaper & more effective ways of doing it. Take a leaf out of the Germans' playbook maybe:

It will have 2 A1Bs.

There are only 3 Zumwalts and they only carry 12 missiles each.

Won't have the speed, endurance or defensive capabilities. Trump Class has a rail gun for BMs/HCMs, 2 5" guns, 2 30mm, 2 300kW laser and 128 cell VLS +SeaRAM.

You're just coming up with ways to justify a platform that's conceived as a prestige project instead of letting the requirements shape the boat. A solution looking for a problem so to speak.

fair to him its looks like the VLS cell count has been increased to 200 mk41 VLS cells. Its not even close to worth 17B usd or even 12B usd each.
