Its a rocket artillery and less of a missile. Limited range. Very limited ability of hitting a moving vessel. Brahmos has 450-600 KM range and will always outgun this. Whats more, an 800 KM variant of Brahmos was just tested. Plus a 1500 KM range anti-ship hypersonic missile is being readied.
We are doing way better than puny 1000 KM. LRAShBM has a range of 1500 KM and has already been test fired, twice. So no issues there. And unlike a stupid rocket artillery, LRAShBM is a real hypersonic missile capable of turning on a dime to hit a moving ship with ease.
That and 800 KM Bramhos will render all of Pakistani ships useless even before they move in the range.

We need a potent SAM system to take down incoming missile not Brahmos. Even if we wiped out all pakistani vessels in day 1, still this threat will be there as a shore based weapon.

Barak-8 was meant to supplement/replace PAC-3 batteries in the terminal BMD role in IDF service. So LRSAM can take on the role, esp now that IN frontline ships are CEC-capable.

LRAShM cant protect out ships from the missile can it? Plus why tf are we even comparing with pakistan? our main opponent has now shifted to china and to stand a chance we need a proper ABM. The LRAShM is good but we need a ship based variant integrated soon and not in fking 2035 when the p18 comes.
We need both the LRAShM and an ABM and like ive said we have tested a sea based ABM in 2023. we simply need to refine it and integrate it.
Project 18 will have ABM systems embedded in them. I doubt it makes sense to fit LRAShM on ships, when hypersonic cruise missile is supposedly a much better ship-based option as the former is much larger and heavier owing to being a hypersonic glide vehicle.
yea a HGV on a ship is not great cause its too big. as for our hypersonic cruise missile we dont yet have a ship based version in development. Maybe with putins visit in december we finally get the tech for the zircon from NPO and make some progress on the brahmos 2 although its probably highly unlikely
Does CM-401 leave the atmosphere? If not, then does that make it easier or harder for system like Barak-8 or VL-SRSAM to intercept such missiles?
near space i.e around 60-100km. Its not out of space yet. The LRSAM(navy barak 8) has a max altitude of around 16-17km. its also quasi ballistic so quite similar to our pralay in that sense(but the pralay has a much flatter trajectory keeping it in the atmosphere and so its able to move a lot more) but its does not have a MARV but is said to be able to maneuver at hypersonic(probably not hypersonic but at least supersonic) so not too far away from the pralay.
its basically a worse version of the pralay but still a decent weapon and unlike the pralay actually produced in decent amounts by the chinese.
near space makes it impossible for the barak 8 to hit in during its slower cruise phase and we will have to wait until it performs its terminal dive. this decreases the likelihood of intercept
the VLSRSAM is not designed to take on ballistic threats. its meant to be used against sea skimming or threats at a much lower altitude.
if what @Speedster1 said is true then we dont need to worry too much about this missile as ASBMs always slow down during the final minutes of the flight cause of air resistance. But the barak ER is the true ATBM capable missile so i still have some misgivings
CM-401 is ultimately an evolution of the land-based SY-400/BP-12 SRBM family. Its low altitude performance at sea level should be significantly degraded.
Given the relative ease with which the USN shot down Houthi ASBM (believed to be Iranian Fateh 313 variants) which is in roughly the same class as CM-401, the IN should be able to tackle CM-401 too.
B-8/LRSAM sits between the ESSM and SM-2 series on the capability curve and was designed for multiple target sets. IAI specifically designed it as a credible alternative to the high end SM-2/3 interceptors which were overkill for the Isreali Navy.
I'd say if the Israelis haven't acquired SM-3 for sea-based BMD yet, the B-8 must be quite capable in the role.
