Tata Motors commemorated its 20th consecutive year of participation at the Geneva motor show in style with the global unveiling of the sleek all-electric E-Vision Sedan Concept. While the sedan concept had been teased in the run up to the motor show, contrary to expectations, it comes built on an EV derivative of Tata’s Omega platform (shared with Land Rover) rather than the Alfa platform (better known as AMP) that is to underpin future hatchback, sedan and small SUV models from Tata. However, the E-Vision Sedan Concept is a design study at this point and the real emphasis is on the flexibility of the Omega platform to be modified to host electric powertrains, as well as the interior concept for Tata EVs of the future.

Like the H5X SUV and 45X hatchback concept that premiered at Auto Expo 2018, the E-Vision Concept is styled to Tata’s latest Impact Design 2.0 design language. By extension that means the look is a huge departure from all that we’ve seen from the carmaker so far. There is a clear visual link to the 45X hatchback concept at the front, what with the slim LED headlamps that flow out from the grille at either end. However, the grille is larger here and brushed aluminium has been used to good effect to embellish what Tata calls the ‘humanity line’ that underlines the grille and headlights. In general, the E-Vision’s front-end looks more ‘evolved’ vis-à-vis that of the 45X concept. The sedan’s smoothly surfaced front bumper, replete with its L-shaped elements and brushed aluminum chin, do suggest as much.
The E-Vision breaks the typical three-box sedan template with an almost fastback-like shape, but, like the Tigor, the boot has a conventional opening. Large 21-inch wheels, the broad C-pillar and a bold and pronounced shoulder line lend solidity to the design, yet there’s a certain visual delicacy with which the roof flows into the tail section. Other details of note at the sides include flush-fitting door handles, sculpted outside mirrors and the use of aluminium to line the top of the windows and base of the doors.
There’s a liberal dose of aluminium at the base of the rear bumper too but the defining design element has to be the recessed section for the high-set tail-lights. Surfacing is crisp and clean throughout and you wouldn’t be wrong to think the concept is from a premium European carmaker; the execution is that good.


Tata Motors had disclosed a new focus on cabin ambience and the human-machine interface on cars built to Impact Design 2.0, and the E-Vision concept’s interior does show the result of that focus. There’s a decidedly premium look to the cabin with a generous use of high-quality wood and upmarket materials. Light colours aid the feeling of space on the inside, further enhanced by the floating dashboard that does without a centre console that extends to the floor. Tata’s designers claim to have made full use of the packaging flexibility allowed by the EV platform to maximise cabin room, and the E-Vision demonstrates how electric vehicle cabins will differ from those of conventional internal combustion engine-powered cars.
The dashboard itself is minimalist in design and is home to dual instrument screens (a hidden screen atop the dash and a retractable screen at the base of the centre console) that remain concealed when not in use. Tata says the rear seats too are fully adjustable and promise to be big on headroom and knee room.


As mentioned earlier, the E-Vision Sedan Concept comes built on a dedicated EV derivative of Tata’s Omega architecture. Tata Motors' engineers say changes to the underbody were sufficient to convert the conventional architecture, designed for combustion engine applications, to one that could be used for electric vehicles. The Omega EV platform is modular, flexible and scalable and ‘will address the range of performance attributes for long range travel.’ Only a few technical details have been revealed as yet, but some of the highlights include a sub-7sec 0-100kph time and a max speed of 200kph. Again, while battery capacity or charging times are not known, Tata has disclosed the E-Vision Sedan Concept offers fast-charging capability.

Also onboard is a ‘prognostics controller for forecasting service requirements of vital components, predictive energy management based on live traffic and connected technologies such as cloud computing, analytics and geospatial mapping’. The E-Vision Sedan Concept is also equipped with advanced driver assist systems (ADAS) features

Tata should do rebranding of luxury cars like Acura for honda ,Lexus for Toyota and Infiniti for Nissan.

Car sales in March rise 12% on strong rural demand

Mumbai: India’s top car makers reported an 11.72% growth in sales in March, boosted by strong semi-urban and rural demand. The top five passenger car makers—Maruti Suzuki India Ltd, Hyundai Motor India Ltd, Mahindra and Mahindra Ltd, Tata Motors Ltd, and Toyota Kirloskar Motor Pvt. Ltd—sold 240,850 units during the month, up from 215,576 units a year ago.

The hiring in auto sector is also picking up big time. Hopefully a good sustained blue collar demand is generated this year and from now on too.

H5x won't look so hot when it steps down to a more realistic 16 inch trim from the current 22 inch. Still a magnificent design.

India pips Germany to be No. 4 car market
Top-gear growth in sales of cars and SUVs has led to India becoming the fourth-largest passenger vehicle (PV) market globally for the first time ever, unseating Germany, in January and February 2018.

With sales of 5,60,806 units in the first two months of calendar 2018, India overtook Germany’s tally of 5,31,100 units. As a result, India is now behind China, US and Japan in the global pecking order with Germany in the fifth position, followed by Brazil and France.

According to a study by SIAM, while China continued to dominate with sales of nearly 4 million units in January and February 2018, US at number two with 8,18,882 units and Japan at number 3 with 7,41,385 units saw significant contraction (see graphic).

Germany’s slip was predicted by its automotive industry body VDA earlier this year. According to VDA, Germany is predicted to see a 2% contraction in its 3.4-million unit sales in 2018, while India is expected to see a 10% increase in the same period.

Accordingly, India should hit around 3.6 million units in 2018 sales, exceeding Germany’s tally for the full calendar as well. India is also the only market in the top four that is on the growth track and is predicted to see a sharp increase in sales. Others like the US and Japan are likely to be flat or negative, and even China was flat in the first two months of 2018. The VDA prediction puts China’s 2018 tally at 25 million units, followed by the US at around 17 million and Japan at 4.3 million. The EU’s cumulative numbers are expected to be 15.6 million units.

Domestic auto experts concur with that view. “The PV market is expected to witness 8-10% growth in FY18, helped by new model launches and favourable macroeconomic environment, with GDP growth rate expected to improve in the second half of FY18, and recovery in rural income,” said EY partner and automotive sector leader Rakesh Batra.

India’s passenger vehicle sales in FY18 have been the highest in history and production has already crossed 4 million units. The high-growth UV/SUV segment production has already hit 1 million with sales of over 900,000 units.

Tata Motors is rocking. Honda and Toyota are not going to take this and going to come back with severe competition. Tata will eclipse MM next fiscal if MMs new promised design is not satisfactory

Mercedes clocks production of 1 lakh cars in India
German luxury car maker Mercedes-Benz today reached cumulative production of one lakh cars in India with the rolling out of an E-Class sedan from its Chakan plant near Pune. The company, which began its journey in India 24 years ago said the next production milestone will be achieved sooner considering the growth that the Indian automotive market has witnessed over the past few years.

The company said in a statement that the roll out of the 1,00,000th Mercedes-Benz vehicle in India is a strong testimony of the customer trust and brand equity that it enjoys in this dynamic country.
Mercedes-Benz India Managing Director and CEO Roland Folger said the achievement also reiterates the company's "commitment and we strongly believe in the India story and its potential. We will further deepen our strong connect with the Indian customers and keep continuing to fascinate them with our products and customer service".

Folger further said that a "spiralling aspiration among young successful Indians, our extensive and expanding local portfolio...we are positive that the next production milestone will be attained even earlier."
In 2014, the company had rolled out 50,000th Mercedes-Benz car from the assembly lines in Chakan. Mercedes-Benz was the first luxury automotive brand to enter the Indian market in 1994.

The W124 E-Class was the first luxury car in India's modern era which rolled out of the assembly plant of Mercedes-Benz India in Pimpri, Pune.
The company has now moved the facility to Chakan near Pune with an investment of over Rs 1,000 crore. Spread over 100 acres, the plant is a part of Mercedes-Benz' global production network.

More power to Modi! India’s power sector showed massive improvement in NDA-era; see chart
The energy deficit in India’s power sector showed significant improvement in last four years, a report has shown. India’s energy deficit, which remained rangebound between 8% and 10% between during 2011-13, improved in FY14 to 4-4.5%, and subsequently contracted to 0.7%, a Care Ratings report has said.

“The improvement could be attributed to rapid addition in thermal capacity in the private sector, which led to increase in electricity production,” the report on four years of economic performance of the Narendra Modi government said. “This indicates improvement in electricity evacuation and power distribution infrastructure,” it added.

The energy deficit could be contained within 1% due to a massive push for infrastructure by the NDA government. The FY13-17 plan period saw private players commissioning 53,660 MW of thermal capacity, which was 23% more than the target, Financial Express reported on Monday. Overall capacity addition of 99,210 MW in the period was 12% ahead of the target.

With a rapid roll-out of coal generation, India is all set to overtake Japan and to have Asia’s second-largest power capacity, data showed. Fueled by a rapid rollout of coal-fired power generation, India will have a power capacity of 363.32 gigawatts in 2018, Bloomberg reported quoting a BMI Research report.

“India’s power sector will remain dominated by coal over the coming decade despite significant growth in cleaner sources – notably nuclear, non-hydro renewables and natural gas,” an analysis by BMI research said last year.
