After AUKUS, in yet another jolt for China, France offers India deal to make 6 nuclear submarines

If the Indian Navy decides to go along with the proposal by France, it will be another feather in the cap for the Atmanirbhar Bharat (Make in India) initiative of the Indian government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi

New Delhi: The Indian Navy, which is undergoing a modernisation process, may get yet another boost as France has offered a major nuclear submarine deal to India.

As part of the deal, France will become a part of India’s program to develop 6 nuclear submarines and has also offered to share conventional technology from its Barracuda-class nuclear submarine program.

I can think of 3 important areas where French cooperation & technology sharing would be welcome, namely:

  • Thales sonar technology
  • Pumpjet propulsors
  • Nuclear-Electric Propulsion aka Electric Drive (silent electric motor replacing noisy reduction gearing)

However, I don't see the scope for much cooperation wrt the reactor itself. The French use LEU-based reactor technology whereas India is already heavily invested into HEU. Billions have already been spent on construction of enrichment facilities & decades-worth of work on CLWR-B1 & CLWR-B2 reactors (based on VM4 and OK650B respectively) has been HEU-focused.

Nothing new, old beverage in new packing. They are offering conventional submarine know-how without pump jet propulsion and Sonar technology, that too without any assistance in nuclear propulsion.

But pertinent question to ask is, what exactly are we offering, excluding the market access to warrant such technical alliance if I dare say it as? Are they only looking at India as prospective market or something else?

P-76I with french subs isn't a bad deal. The only issue will be cost.

Russian reactors are superior. The ones the French sell are only at 10% enrichment and need to be refuelled every 10 years or sum'n.
 
If you have refueling ability, it isn't an issue, Australia didn't. We heard how great russian tanks were too.

India also awarded the Scorpene over Project 636 as part of the international tender for Project 75. To date, four such diesel-electric submarines are in the national fleet.

Project 636 is outdated. That's well known. Russian sub welding is questionable. But their subs are only behind the Americans and not by much. You have no clue what you're talking about.

Having several persons of my family in french submarines, there are not a lot of russian submarines who can escape THALES sonars.

I'm not anti-France, The frog sub would have been a very good conventional, when adding the other stuff too. We use Thales sensors on our Collins sub. If you look, France is very involved with Australian military procurement. The Rafale is a good 4.5 gen.

I don't like the deceit coming from frog fanboys. This is what I object to. Don't mix it up with anti-France.

All our nuc subs, including the small Rubis class are LEU powered.

3 months every 10 years.... = 2.5% of the time = nearly nothing. You can make it during a general overhaul.

I understand that sharing this tech is a big issue. If France doesn't include the nuclear reactor in the sale. Why would India want to buy the sub? Why wouldn't it continue with Russian, until have have their own reactor?

Nothing in the french newspaper....
I think, at best, it may be a PROSUB like contract (PROSUB = a deal with Brazil to give a full assistance to study and built a SSN, but without the nuc part)
