India to equip Arjun Mk 1A MBTs with advanced targeting system​

India's state-run Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) is equipping the Indian Army's new Arjun Mk 1A main battle tank (MBT) with an electro-optical (EO) fire-control system. A source from Tonbo Imaging told Janes that the company is manufacturing the system in partnership with BEL's unit in Chennai, India.

“Tonbo Imaging is partnered with BEL, Chennai, to meet [BEL's] demand for fire-control systems. Hence, BEL awarded us a contract to manufacture and deliver the [electro-optical fire-control system] for Arjun Mk 1A MBTs,” the source added.

According to the source, the contract features the delivery of the Elpeos fire-control product.

The source also confirmed that Tonbo Imaging will deliver the Elpeos to BEL for integration onto the Arjun Mk 1A MBTs. Tonbo Imaging describes the Elpeos as an EO sight for remote-controlled weapon stations (RCWSs). The Elpeos system has an integrated multisensor and is designed for precision targeting.

Who knows, Arjun MK3 was a term used in past just like Surya ICBM, now we know Surya ICBM really was there..

Arjun MK3 can be also FMBT which Army have it's own term call FRCV which sound not very intelligent.

AFAIK, Mk2 is NGMBT, so Mk3 should be a new FRCV UCP.

The Mk2 is a new 6-wheel hull with a crew capsule and an indigenous 1500HP engine, with an unmanned turret and autoloader. It will weigh 50T. We may buy a few hundred of the Mk2s as stopgap perhaps, until FRCV arrives around 2035-40, which will then replace both the T-72s and T-90s (long term).

Of 2400 T-72s, we plan to replace 1700+ T-72s with 1770 FRCV. So it's possible the remaining 600-700 will be these Arjun Mk2s, at worst split between more T-90s and this new tank. Or we will just build more tanks and boost our frontline tank strength to 4000+.

I believe Mk2 is currently moving into or is already in the CDR phase. PDR finished last year. If the engineering process starts next year or so, we could see it enter serial production well before 2030, followed by a 10 to 15-year production run for 500+ tanks or so.

Arjun Mk1A's production will end in 2028. T-90 is also licensed until 2028. Both by OFB. So I'm guessing this tank will be built by OFB as well.

FRCV is so large, expensive and complex that this tank may end up being a fallback tank in case of failure. That would avoid more imports.

Then why it is specifically mentioned apart from mk1a in doc.

Cannot speak of what is presently going on..

Though DRDO & Army used different nomenclature, do not confuse both..

Both Organization may end up with two different products, one may be DRDO & Private & other Lisenced From Private Sector, Just like what happening with light tanks..

Turkey is ready to start serial production of its main battle tank Altay . The first batch will use a Korean powerpack engine . From 2025, the Altay will run with the local Batu engine . The first phase includes the production of 100 tanks ordered by Ankara from the Turkish company BMC.. May be Next rival tank for us in Pakistan .

 
Did I post this before? It is well known now. First Arjun mk1 alpha likely by 2024-25 fingers crossed. Powerpack process being in the works.

“It is intimated that the missile firing capability requirement was there in MBT Arjun Mk II as required by the User. The missile firing capability from MBT Arjun Mk II main Gun has been proved in the user trial held during 2013. However, the missile fired from MBT Arjun Mk II could not meet the acceptance criteria in the short range due to issues in missile. Further in 2018 User has delinked the missile firing from MBT Arjun Mk II and the tank has been renamed as MBT Arjun Mk 1A and the user has taken forward the requirement procurement of Qty 118 Nos of MBT Arjun Mk 1A and subsequently the deemed contract for supply of Qty 118 Nos. of MBT Arjun Mk 1A has been placed on AVNL/HVF on 10 Jan 2022 to the cost of Rs.10378.326 Cr (118 tanks including 4 years ESP and training aids & aggregates) ARDE/DRDO is developing the missile for MBT Arjun which is under DRDO trials stages. Accordingly electro-optical systems and associated electronics systems will have to be tweaked and integrated.
