BHUBANESWAR: Months after the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) raised doubts on the quality of Surface-to-Air Missile Akash, Indian Air Force (IAF) successfully test-fired two rounds of the missile from a defence base off the Odisha coast on Wednesday. The missiles were fired against electronic targets.

Defence sources said, the complete Akash missile system including targets were operated by IAF personnel exploiting the overall capabilities of the system in different envelops. The missiles were fired from the launching complex-III of the Integrated Test Range (ITR) at Chandipur-on-sea.

“All the mission objectives have been met and the missile system had performed as expected. The entire flight of both the missiles was captured by electro-optical tracking systems. The flight path was smooth while its ceiling and speed were perfect,” said a defence official.This was third successful test of the indigenously developed missile in the last two days. On Tuesday, a similar trial was conducted from the same test facility. While the hat-trick trials have demonstrated the missile’s capabilities, IAF is planning more tests on Thursday.

Defence sources said, two squadrons of Akash missile system developed by DRDO have been inducted into IAF and the system was in continuous production and induction.Akash is India’s first indigenously designed, developed and produced air defence system capable of engaging aerial threats up to a distance of 30 km. The multi target, multi-directional, all weather air-defence system consisting of surveillance and tracking radars, control centres and ground support systems mounted on high mobility vehicles is designed to enable integration with other air defence command and control networks through secured communication links.

The missile, which has a launch weight of 720 kg, a length of 5.8 metres and a diameter of 35 cm, can carry a pay load of 50 kg. It can fly at supersonic speed of around 2.5 Mach and can reach an altitude of 18 kms. The missile can be fired from both tracked and wheeled platforms.The missile is crucial for India’s air defence programme as it can be used to counter enemy aircrafts and air-to-surface missiles.

The Radars, telemetry and electro-optical systems along the coast have tracked and monitored all the health parameters of the missile. The launch operations were witnessed by Director General (Missiles), DRDO and Scientific Adviser to Raksha Mantri (SA to RM) Dr. G Satheesh Reddy; Director DRDL, Shri MSR Prasad; Program Director, Shri G Chandra Mouli; Director ITR, Dr. BK Das and other top DRDO scientists.

SA to RM congratulated all the DRDO scientists and Armed Forces for this success.

This missile is being inducted into Army as Short Range Surface to Air Missile (SRSAM). This is the first Surface to Air Missile with indigenous seeker that has been test fired. With this success, India has achieved the capability of making any type of Surface to Air Missile.

Not first time,

As part of the tests, five Akash missiles while simulating different situations destroyed five different targets successfully and met the parameters for which they were being tested. The missiles have been equipped with new seekers, sources said.

@Ashwin Isn't QR-SAM, BMD already tested with RF seeker??

It was a misreport by Livefist, I had posted the official PiB/MoD statement below that.

This missile is being inducted into Army as Short Range Surface to Air Missile (SRSAM). This is the first Surface to Air Missile with indigenous seeker that has been test fired.
 
That's what i don't understand and what i was confirming with @Ashwin. We have proven indigenous seekers on Nag ATGM, Astra AAM, AAD, PDV, QRSAM and now Akash, so its not first SAM i guess.

The QR-SAM used during the two previous tests did not used the indigenous seeker designed by RCI and manufactured by VEM technologies. It is being integrated currently.

"A home-grown seeker would also get onboard the missile for the subsequent launches."

In addition, PDV uses an IIR seeker, not an RF seeker like the AAD, which in the previous test have used a seeker co-developed with Russia. Not entirely indigenous.

"Dr Saraswat, who has just been awarded the country’s one of the highest achievement awards, the Padma Bhushan, said that DRDO had been able to develop key RF (Radio Frequency) seeker technologies for missiles in cooperation with Russia, and that in the last missile test, the seeker used was made in India. Digital processing in any case is based on DRDO’s own software."

“Today, we are able to design and develop RF seekers, and in about a year or so, we will be independent in this key technology,” Dr Saraswat said in an interview with India Strategic."

Subsequent tests of both QR-SAM and AAD will use the RCI-developed RF Ku-band seekers.
 
Akash-NG will hit the same range as LR-SAM with dual pulse motor. It was designed to be a close-in defense system which needs a thruout boosted trajectory to do the job in shortest possible time to deny a firing solution to an aircraft which has broken thru all defenses. Thats why it has ramjet propulsion giving it a Mach 3.5M speed. It can't have a ballistic or lofted trajectory as used by LR-SAM Barak-8. The barak-8 uses its booster to rise high and than use gravity to sustain its speed to intercept the incoming missile at longer range. the incoming velocity of the target adds to the speed of the missile. If you make barak-8 have same speed as Akash-Ng, it won't be able to intercept any target beyond 50kms.
