Very few submarines are equipped to defend against arial threats, if any at all. And even if few might be equipped with such system, they are probably very low in range. SMART is developed for attacking underwater boats only from standoff range as of now. So anti missile defence doesn't come into picture yet.

I was talking about the submarines that travel in a Carrier Battle Group or those that accompany destroyers like SSKs/SSNs. For those submarines that travel alone, I guess that stands.

Ongoing but nothing new yet. There has been an uptick in work relating to Ultra Low Frequency(ULF) sonar transducers. By the design of the transducers it seems they are meant to be conformal/body flush on the two sides of a ship. Nothing on the spherical sonar.

Also some new work relating to LIDAR based sea bed arrays. The design seen was very compact & doesn't appear to be an initial prototype. It appears the design work on the LIDAR based sea bed sensors have been finalised.

There was a iDEX challenge on it. Apparently Tonbo participated, don't know what happened after that. There was some talk about a Technology Development Fund(TDF) project inviting industry & academia on photonics & submarine mast mounted EW/ESM systems. Again all went quiet after that.

Older version of ALH with TAL torpedo

Six of the 16 naval Mk-III ALH are to be equipped with an indigenous low frequency dunking sonar (LFDS) developed by Kochi-based Naval Physical and Oceanographic Laboratory. The sonar’s units are being produced by state-owned Bharat Electronics Limited with a host of sub-vendors downstream. Earlier this decade, the navy had offered a Mk-I naval ALH as test bed for developmental trials of the LFDS (this author was fortunate to participate in ground and flight trials of the LFDS).

 
Electric Heavyweight Torpedo project seems to be preceding. A new medium range ship launched, presumably electric powered, torpedo has broken cover. It is named Jalastra.

With the EHWT, Varunastra, TAL Sheyna, ALWT & SMART we have covered the entire engagement radius of Anti-submarine warfare. The weapons combined with P-8Is, Do-228s, Predator drones, MH-60R, Kamorta class etc. will give us the most potent ASW capabilities in the IOR.
