Less than 20 per cent of Bullet train components will be Japanese: Govt

Less than 20 per cent of the components of the Bullet train project would be Japanese, the Railways informed Parliament today.

On being asked if it was true that Japanese companies would meet at least 70 per cent of core components for India's first Bullet train and its track, Minister of State for Railways Rajen Gohain said that it was not.

"Japanese component for the project is estimated to be about 18.6 per cent of the total project cost. Make in India is an integral part of the project," he said without elaborating on the components.

According to the ministry, as per the current estimate, procurement from Japan will be about 18 per cent of the project cost.

Gohain said a joint Indian and Japanese task force on 'Make in India' and Transfer of Technology (ToT) under the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High Speed Rail (MAHSR) project has been constituted.

He said that this was constituted to provide a platform for "Indian and Japanese companies to come together and facilitate tie-ups by way of formation of joint venture and transfer of technology."

"The task force and the four subgroups constituted for civil works, track, rolling stock and electrical and system areas have held several meetings in this regard," the minister said.

The Bullet train project is targeted for completion by the year 2022-23.

The feasibility report had assessed a ridership of 35,800 passengers per day in the year 2023 which goes up to 1,85,800 per day by the year 2053.

This will be an excellent model project for future bullet train projects in India, heard that Maharashtra CM has planned for Nagpur-Mumbai bullet train, the land acquisition will not be a problem in this route as they plan to make it above or below the upcoming Nagpur-Mumbai Expressway:
Mumbai-Nagpur bullet train next on agenda for Maharashtra
What's there in Nagpur to deserve a bullet train ? Might as well have a Delhi - Bombay one ? Frankly , I've never heard of this . Any references to support your claim , please ?

Maharashtra CM wants to connect Vidharbha region to the more developed parts of Maharashtra to create more trade and industry and that is why you see all the aerospace projects going to Nagpur including the Boeing MRO facility, Rafale Jets and Falcon business jets etc. They are also planning to make it the biggest cargo hub of India due to its central location. Regarding Bullet train project, In current scenario how can you plan for Delhi-Mumbai project when Kejriwal was hyperventilating and crapping all over even the idea of bullet trains in India whereas Devendra Phadnavis is pushing hard for bullet train project as he already has the land acquired for Nagpur-Mumbai Expressway. Not going to happen in near future. Fednavis is fooling people in the state. At best he can get an extension till Pune. Center is not going to fund more than one route in a state.

There are at least 5-6 routes in the feasablity study phase. Nagpur-Mumbai is not one of them. Next in line would be Chennai-Bangalore or Delhi- Chandigarh.

Let us see what happens in the future, Fadnavis is very dedicated on these Rail and Road projects, not much to fool people with as majority of his voter base do not care much about Bullet trains, this was not even shown much in news.

And According to HSRC website, the Delhi-Nagpur will be the phase 1 of the Delhi Chennai project, so any which way i see one or two bullet train routes connecting Nagpur due to its central location.

Just for one line, it cannot.

Perhaps when we actually start building a pan India network.

20% of total project cost.
Not 20% of total components..

civil work , labor work, electrical work etc may be Indian .
As such Japanese Train components may be much higher..

Thanks to all defense news, we understand word play much better..:cautious:

What's wrong with that? 80% of project cost will generate lots of jobs.

Does India have any expertise in high speed rails? It's better to use Japanese technology for trains and signaling systems. For subsequent projects India can slowly absorb the technology and try to make in India in collaboration with Japanese.

Not going to happen until unless we give the Japanese lots of lines to work on. For one line its very unfeasable nor has India has industries experienced in techs related to bullet rails. As far as I see it, I would still be happy with 70% Japanese contribution. If India can manufacture steel rails for this project, I would consider this as a biggest gain.

nothing wrong in the deal ..

MoS railways sounded like we are going to build about 80% of the train components
Question was about core components , answer is in terms of project cost .

Most of the cost goes to things like land acquisition, bridges, rails, rail ties, nuts, bolts, coaches, electric lines etc. All of this can be made in India. It is the core technology which is imported. 20000 crore of import for 750km tracks is a big amount. Since the 80% cost is financed by Japanese at low interest loans, it is a net gain

Those who were saying that normal train travel takes 3 hours from Mumbai to Ahmedabad is day dreaming. 750km in 3 hours is too much
