Family remains untouched by PM Narendra Modi’s rise
Akhilesh Kumar Singh| TNN | Updated: Nov 30, 2017, 12:25 IST
  • Unlike the more common trend of relatives gaining in affluence and influence, Sombhai objects to being called the "prime minister’s brother"
  • The Modi family’s modest means plays a key role in BJP's aggressive attacks on rivals for promoting dynasts as leaders.

Sombhai Modi, PM Narendra Modi's elder brother

VADNAGAR (MEHSANA): Around mid-day, 75-year-old Sombhai Modi blows the conch shell at the newly-constructed Sirdi Sai temple in an old age home run by the Sarvodaya Sewa Trust headed by him. The compound recently acquired gates but there is nothing to detract from the relative obscurity and ordinariness that marks the 'aarti' and other rituals that are part of the daily routine at the ashram.

Sombhai's younger brother Narendra Modi's rise+ to the prime ministership has not changed things at the Vadnagar ashram where Sombhai has lived since the 2001 Gujarat earthquake. Modi became chief minister later that year, launching him on a journey that took him to the PM's post, but Sombhai's life remains unchanged as he tends to the elderly and organises blood donation and healthcare camps.

Unlike the more common trend of relatives gaining in affluence and influence, Sombhai objects to being called the "prime minister's brother" and feels comfortable with the lack of attention. Despite repeated requests, Sombhai refuses an interview, saying, "It kills the purpose of not using the position of my younger brother."

He adds, "There are several people running old age homes like me but you chose to interview me simply because I am Narendra Modi's brother. It encourages dynasty, and may be, relatives and other acquaintances will try to influence people and misuse the power."

Sombhai suggests a visit to Vadnagar town, which has witnessed changes recently with the construction of a new railway station, the one where Modi used to sell tea at an outlet run by his father Damodardas Modi.

Sombhai is not an exception. The Modi clan, descendants of Moolchand Mangilal Modi, Narendra Modi's grandfather, are quite widely spread out. Most lead relatively unremarkable lives. In the time Modi became CM in 2001 and PM in 2014, his extended family remains much the same.

Modi's first cousin Ashokbhai cooks meals at a sevashram in Vadnagar. Ashokbhai cooks 'khichdi' and his wife Vimlaben Modi washes utensils. The couple earns Rs 4,000-5,000 a month to take care of three daughters and a son. In the festival season, he sells kites, firecrackers and puts up stalls at nearby fairs. "I wish Narendrabhai attends my daughters' wedding," says Ashokbhai, who is considerably younger to the PM.

With assembly polls approaching, most family members are cautious, avoiding media glare. One of them says, "Why do we need to even prove that we have no political dreams. We want to live like 125 crore Indians and gain in life through hard work."

Modi's younger sister Vasantiben and her husband Hansmukhbhai Modi, who retired from LIC, live in a row house at Vishnagar, some 90 km from Ahmedabad.

The Modi family's modest means plays a key role in BJP's aggressive attacks on rivals for promoting dynasts as leaders. Rahul Gandhi is the prime target as was Akhilesh Yadav in the UP elections. BJP's slogan of "politics of performance" is buttressed by the lack of change in the Modi family's fortunes.

Modi's youngest brother Pankajbhai, an officer with the state information department, is the most well known, thanks to mother Heeraben staying with him in his three-room house in Ahmedabad. Modi visits on occasions, including his birthday to take his mother's blessings.

Another older brother, Amrutbhai, retired from a private company as a fitter in 2005. He settled in Ghatlodia Colony in Ahmedabad. His family's austerity has helped Modi avoid being tagged for nepotism though some family members rue that the PM should attend a family dinner. That does not seem very likely though.

Family remains untouched by PM Narendra Modi’s rise

No matter what they call Modi, they can NOT call him corrupt ever.
This man is an inspiration for all.

Let us not go overboard with this. His families modest ways is remarkable comparing to 99% out there.

However,

Lots of BJP clan is not so clean. The party donations rules, demo money laundering allegations, his cabinet buddies assets etc are still in play.

We will only get to know about any foul play years down the line.

You missed it buddy.
The topic is Modi and NOT his party.
Nobody here has claimed that BJP is a party of angels.

I did not miss it. You just missed what I implied. If he shuts eye towards corruption around him, it will only come to him.

After Nehru, he is the most powerful office bearer of PM.

What he is doing is much great as it had enforced the respect of PM as head of government which has been destroyed by a clone without backbone and who was eager to take away credit from a great leader and PM of non-gandhi origin in congress.

What makes you think so?
DEMONETISATION is the biggest proof that Modi is in no mood to spare anyone or anything that acts an impediment for development of India.

On surface, yes.

I belong to a “clan” who has been a job provider for few decades. I will update you when change happens.

There is not a single political party anywhere in the world that is 100% clean. And BJP is not a dynastic party where Modi is alpha and omega, but the point is that he kept himself and his family clean even after 13 years as CM of a prosperous state with lots of business activity, and then 3+ years as the PM of the country. Besides, his government also remained remarkably clean especially in a country like India where corruption is the norm, and people don't seem to mind much about it...considering how the corrupts keep on getting re-elected.

If we cannot appreciate what's good, then we will end up getting what's bad.

A 100% clean political party is not possible anywhere, and certainly not in India where there's still a lot of corruption (including amongst the general population - where you can literally buy peoples' votes). But Modi is the cleanest leader I have seen anywhere in an incredibly long time, easily one of the cleanest and most austere leaders that India has ever got, and as far as corruption, nepotism etc are concerned; I'll take the BJP over any other party in India right now.

About 50% of the support for Modi comes from this alone. BJP is riding off it essentially.

Hope he has set a good direction for how politics (as bad and fuzzy it is in reality and always will be so in relative sense given what power does to avearge/typical human mind) ought to strive towards so at least there is some check/balance against the worst of it at the top. People will naturally gravitate to whoever does it best.... till the rest (power candidates) improve their end too in such way so there is less contrast....or simply perish. This is good for India in long run.....we were controlled by identity politics too long, we sorely need balance by merit. I for one enjoy when the ones losing power now are relying on conspiracy theories like "EVM rigging" to explain their severe losses in earlier guaranteed grounds...can they see whats needed to become like a Phoenix? If so they should prove it than talk.

Any civilisation ascendancy/re-ascendancy needs a string of good leaders (each one tries to outperform the last one, realises the good and bad etc and how to increase one and decrease other) and of course it often starts with that first "one" that set some strong formative concepts into play. Finally it feels like we are living on verge of a new better age, will it be golden age, lets see.

Not a great fan of modi but among current generation of BJP and other party there is no one who can come close to him in terms of strong willpower and control over masses. Many pro and anti Modi article are published but truth is India needs Modi for its economic and geo political power growth. India never looked so promising in my lifetime.we are at inflection point of growth and there is no one better than him to lead us.

:unsure::unsure:
He is certainly the kind of PM India needed after 5 years of blatant corruption by Manmohan Singh's lead UPA regime but he too is a one man show don't you think?
Surrounded by a group of not so honest (amoral) people. What happens when he(Modi) decides to target their vested interests, when his chain of command within his own party starts to loosen up because of this? People around him decides to act for their own benefits instead of following the party line....that will be the day we will see demise of Modi as one of the most strongest and wittiest person to become the PM of India.

It is good that Modi's family has not been allowed to benefit from his status as PM , but I hope he does not try to be a mahatma. The last time India had a mahatma it wasn't good for India . Mahatmas are not practical people.

If Modi does win the 2019 election then one wonders if he would try some bigger jolt than demonetisation , emboldened as he would be by the people's support to such radical moves that his victory would imply. And I am wary of radical moves . What if he cancels all cash altogether in his quest for cashless society ?

I agree. A little bit of corruption never hurt the country. Besides BJP corruption is different from Khangress corruption. It's about time people realized that.

Btw, what do you think about the elevation of Rahul Gandhi to party president post?
