While on the subject, let me take the liberty of recommending The Decline & Fall of The Sassanian Empire by Parvaneh Pourshariati. It's a revisionist take on the Arab conquests of Sassanian Persia where the author argues with evidence that the invasions began somewhere in 628 itself during Mohammed's lifetime.

It's a controversial view not without its own share of critics but the author has laid out her case in a convincing manner. She's also detailed the various intrigues surrounding the civil War & the war with the Byzantines then which came back to haunt both the Persians & the Byzantines, particularly the former.

Be informed it's history & not a military history of that period. Having said that the read is an enjoyable & rewarding quest. @Austerlitz

Early Islamic attacks did gave some of the finest leaders of that era. I am especially intrigued by Khalid-Bin-Waleed, Salahuddin Ayubi of Ayubic dynasty (11th/12th century?) and Ottoman Empire (Mehmet the conqueror, Suleiman Khan for their wins) (14th/15th century?). I think if Suleiman wasn't so much paranoid and dependent on advisors(which was norm in empires back in those days) and not ended up killing his children, especially Mustafa, Ottoman Empire would had broken through European Marvel of the time Vienna and many others.
