New Delhi (Sputnik) — After a spate of mob lynchings, triggered by fake videos involving "child lifters," cost the lives of 29 innocent citizens, the Indian government has decided to employ the police to monitor the circulation of fake messages via smart-phone applications like WhatsApp.

According to a source, the Home Ministry is preparing to order the police in all of India's states to monitor the spread of such fake videos and take swift action against those found guilty.

"As 29 people have died in the last four months due to WhatsApp rumors. The central Home Ministry will soon send an advisory to the Director General of the state police to act swiftly in these cases. Furthermore, the Home Ministry will also ask various state governments to take strong action against those who are spreading rumors and taking law into their own hands," a top Home Ministry official, who wished to remain anonymous, told Sputnik.

The local police will keep a close watch on people who indulge in spreading rumors by circulating videos and fake news through WhatsApp and Facebook, the official added.

The Indian government is also preparing to launch a comprehensive social media policy so as to curb rumor mongering on various social media platforms, which has strained India's social fabric.
Sensing the gravity of the situation, India's Ministry of Information Technology has asked officials to discuss the matter with social media platforms and WhatsApp, the source told Sputnik.

These so-called "WhatsApp Lynchings" have been reported from the Indian states of Assam, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Telangana.

'spring into action'? Like Ravish, I too smell an IT cell gone out of control here....As Ravish said, and he is usually right. The said cell should now be shut down. @vstol Jockey 'governance with a difference'

I was wondering at the lack of mass hysteria in MSM here . Had this resulted in even one lynching due to Cattle rustling or transport or slaughter , what would we have to endure on Prime time or Superprimetime ?

Surprisingly , there's not a single piece of "investigative journalism" by MSM (RIP) on who's behind these fake videos except speculations - which passes on for investigative journalism ATM.

It's confirmed that the lives lost in some kind of lynchings is more sacred to the "national " cause than others .

Incidentally our favourite news channel UndyTV did an expose with Alt news a couple of nights ago wherein they "investigated " the rumours being spread on social media following the rape and murder of an 8 year old in Mandsaur where the prime accused happened to be an "Irfan." They plumbed the depths to show how photos mere morphed / photoshopped by a new website going by the name of IndiaFlash or something on those lines to show that this website was registered barely a fortnight back and was peddling lies quickly linking it to , who else , but their favourite bogeyman - The Sangh .

When confronted by the BJP spokesman on how the rape of a nun a few years back was blamed on the Sangh but when it turned out to be illegal Bangladeshi immigrants or how in the run up to the state elections in Delhi , the acts of vandalisations on churches there blamed on the Sangh were proven to be acts by miscreants , the eminent news presenter Vishnu SOM beat a hasty retreat & changed topics .

Leads me to accept with some difficulty the truth in what one of my friend's says about people with Hindu names and a rabidly anti Hindu agenda - that they are circumcised Hindus / crypto Christians.
