Indian Air Force and French Air and Space Force (Armée de l'Air et de l'Espace) will conduct a bilateral Air exercise, Ex Desert Knight-21 at Air Force Station Jodhpur from 20 to 24 Jan 21.

French side will participate with Rafale, Airbus A-330 Multi-Role Tanker Transport (MRTT), A-400M Tactical Transport aircraft and approximately 175 personnel. The Indian Air Force aircraft participating in the exercise will include Mirage 2000, Su-30 MKI, Rafale, IL-78 Flight Refuelling Aircraft, AWACS and AEW&C aircraft.

The exercise marks an important milestone in the series of engagements between the two Air forces. As part of Indo-French defence cooperation, Indian Air Force and French Air and Space Force have held six editions of Air Exercises named 'Garuda', the latest being in 2019 at Air Force Base Mont-de-Marsan, France. As measures to further the existing cooperation, the two forces have been gainfully utilising available opportunities to conduct 'hop-exercises'. The French Air and Space Force deployment while ferrying to Australia for Ex Pitchblack in 2018 was hosted by IAF at Air Force Stations Agra and Gwalior for exercise with fighters and MRTT aircraft. Presently, the French detachment for Ex Desert Knight-21 is deployed in Asia as part of their 'Skyros Deployment' and will ferry in forces to Air Force Station Jodhpur.

The exercise is unique as it includes fielding of Rafale aircraft by both sides and is indicative of the growing interaction between the two premier Air Forces. As the two detachments commence their air exchange from 20 Jan onwards, they will put into practice operational experience gained across terrains and spectrums and endeavour to exchange ideas and best practices to enhance interoperability.

Do we know if we are going to take advantage of the arrival of the French detachment to facilitate the ferrying of the 3 Indian Rafale planned for the same period?

Indian, French air forces to conduct 5-day joint military drill near Jodhpur from January 20

India and France will carry out a five-day mega air exercise near Jodhpur beginning Wednesday that is expected to see Rafale jets of the two countries engaging in complex manoeuvres to enhance operational coordination, official sources said. The exercise –’Ex-Desert Knight 21’– is taking place at a time when the Indian Air Force has been keeping all its frontline bases across the country in a high state of operational readiness in view of the Sino-India border row in eastern Ladakh.

“The aim of the exercise is to provide operational exposure and share best practices towards enhancing combat capability,” said a source. Both the air forces will deploy frontline fighter jets as well as transport, and tanker aircraft in the exercise. The French and Indian air forces have been conducting the Garuda exercises for the last several years as part of efforts to boost operational cooperation.

The sources said the upcoming exercise is in addition to the ‘Garuda’ series and is indicative of the eagerness between the two sides to further enhance mutual cooperation, They said the French forces are currently deployed in Asia as part of their ‘Skyros Deployment’, and will transit through India. In a boost to its strike capability, the IAF received the first batch of five Rafale jets in July last year, nearly four years after the government inked an agreement with France to procure 36 of the aircraft at a cost of Rs 59,000 crore. The second batch of three Rafale fighter jets joined the IAF in November.

The Rafale jets, manufactured by French aerospace major Dassault Aviation, are India’s first major acquisition of fighter planes in 23 years after the Sukhoi jets were imported from Russia. The newly inducted fleet has been carrying out sorties in eastern Ladakh.

This is what happens when you appoint some one to override the existing power regime, every one try to please that person to get favor. What a general from army will get by flying in an mrtt or what the use of offering such services for an army person an air force platform ?

The job of CDS does have some powers , perks and privileges

He is a serving officer who went to see an exercise -- And of course he is the Highest Uninformed officer in the country

This also shows the growing India France defence relationship

On the other hand
We also have to see the Spectacle of dozens of MPs and Bureaucrats watching Vayu Shakti Firepower Demonstration every 2 years at Pokhran firing range

Such Pleasure Trips are a real waste
of Public Money

MPs MLAs are elected by people, infact they represent the most power entity of this country aka people of this country. They are much ahead CDS or military or any IAS guys.

Last but not least the same CDS is sabotaging MMRCA 2 and IN's airwing modernisation.

In my opinion MPs and Bureaucrats watching Vayu Shakti is a waste of Public Money

Infact many people also question the expenses involved in Republic Day Parade

CDS will not stop any purchase or Acquisition

Because Everything depends on MONEY available ie Finance Ministry

Vayu shakthi is an air exercise conducted by our military as a part of operational preparedness, familiarisation etc. Its not a waste of money or if some elite is witnessing country is not gonna lose any money.
But, i do agree with your vies on republic day parade, its an extravagance, but affordable for this country.
He may or may not capable to stop purchase by armed forces, but as he is definitely have influence on government, and its a known from his previous statements that he is so much against IAF on mmrca2 and IN on AC program.

Back in pictures on the Indian port of call, the first stage of the Skyros mission. On the programme for the deployed Airmen: exchanges with their Indian counterparts, joint missions and in-flight refuelling of the A330 Phoenix with Indian Air Force Sukhoi 30 aircraft.
Next stop, the United Arab Emirates.
