Indian Nuclear Attack Submarines (SSN) - Updates & Discussions

May be we should lease more SSNs from Russia while we can. Do they have any available for leasing?

We have already leased atleast two akulas. Ni need for more. What we need is 12 arihants in SSGN configuration and armed with nirbhay, brahmos, k-15 sagariaka, shauryas and Black shark torpedos.

I'd rather see us outright buying some Yasens. It has a life-of-the-ship reactor and can be sealed, just like what the Americans are planning to do with the Australian Virginias.

A long term lease with option to buy at the end is fine too. I like Yasen as well. Too bad there are what 4-5 of them completed. And given the money crunch Russia will be hard pressed to put more into service.

We can't lease what they have, we are gonna have to take a new build version that can be delivered alongside our own SSNs the next decade.

Dunno what's the urgency with the SSN clearance. It's aimed for the next FY. And the next FY starts only from April and goes all the way until March 2024.

In any case there's a good chance long lead procurement has already begun.

"Building these vessels is one of the most complex, expensive and time-consuming projects a shipyard and navy can undertake. Only the US, UK, France, China, Russia and India have the capability to do so – but plans are now in place for a next-generation design, dubbed ‘SSN-AUKUS' ".
Lol! Then why the hell are we leasing SSNs from Russia? :ROFLMAO:

Timing and Geography my dear.

If we were somewhere in southern America, it would not have been that much of an issue. The big devil is USA and it does not need to send entire navy to influence your country. It has Hollywood and CIA to do that. China works differently. It only knows one thing and one thing only. To build things fast and cheap. And that includes ships and subs too.
So you need a bare minimum and that includes 5-6 SSNs. We have exactly.... 0. We need 5-6 like 5 years back. So what do we do? Build Beg Buy Borrow or Steal?

Building them will take 50-100 odd years in Indian Standard Time.
We are not the right skin tone that begging will get us those.
Usually no one sells them.
We suck at stealing anything.

So... that kind of narrows down to borrowing.

We can... once Russia has enough desperation. I do not know what Navy will like to be done to them to customize it for our waters but then we have fielded Nerpa once so it may not be impossible. Just someone teach the sailor boys to close the hatch and not drive the damn sub in the rocks, nose first.

Russia will never get that desperate.

Right now, the best we can do is perhaps add another Akula as lease to act as a stopgap until any potential Yasen orders come through.

Frankly there's no chance they'd lease or sell the Yasen or the Borei, even if they're in a financial crunch which they could well be by the end of the decade BECAUSE..... China , but we don't need the entire product as well .

What we need is access to niche technologies like their latest generation N reactors for energy requirements as well as to power our submarines, pump jet Propulsion if it indeed is better than the French ( which I doubt) assuming the French are offering their state of the art to us. Then there's their space based tech.

We've our own programs in place. All we need is access ONLY to those technologies which require decades of research to accomplish , to cut the chase.

Remember, China did not / could not stop Russia from trying to sell its fifth gen aircraft and A2A missiles. Right now, India is Russia's biggest buyer of Arms. Lease of SSNs including Yasen will not be a problem. No one can sell SSBN.

Because our welding is far inferior to the Russians and Chinese forget the rest of the Western powers. Although the Arihant has decent stealth. It's still trash.

Do you have any credible data to support your statement, “ It’s still trash”? If not, then it’s pure BS.
Somehow people assume, anything made in India has to be trash by default!!

Where has the sale been effected ? China's not going to sit back & see cutting edge state of the art technology be transferred to India . That's the thing .

It all depends on how weakened Russia is post war & the time it'd take to recover which in turn depends on how far the war lasts . The longer it goes on the more it leaves Russia weakened , the longer the road to recovery , the more the dependence on China .

While Russia would hate it , it has no choice . Having said that , you can expect a lot of double & triple crosses between Russia & China & Russia & India viz : promises being reneged upon or being partially fulfilled , prices being renegotiated , technologies promised exclusively to one party finding it's way to the other party too , etc .

Russia didn't submit to the US machinations due to it's own existential dilemmas mostly but also due to pride , the same pride which'd see friction between itself & China when China starts extracting it's pound of flesh . India'd have to play it's cards carefully. We haven't been dealt a strong hand here . But neither is it a weak hand .

It's not trash, that was just exxageration. But the Arihant doesn't give us actual deterrence against the Chinese. Their Jin class have far bigger SLBM's. It's enough for pakistan but we need S5.
As for inferior welding, IN ships have inferior finishing as compared to Chinese and Japanese ships. That would also translate in submarine welding too.

By the time we buy a Yasen class sub, it's gonna be closer to 2030 and we will be big and mature enough as a market to influence decisions in Russia and act as a counterweight to China.

We need to sign the Yasen deal by 2030, ie, when we are a $7T economy and take deliveries when we are worth $20+T. External pressure is not applicable to us.
