Doing that now means taking out a ship from somewhere else. When we can do that without doing a compromise elsewhere, only then we can start to look after going beyond.

Our current fleet, minus SSN, is enough to take care of the entire IOR and even the SCS. We have/will have 2 carriers and 34 warships, that's more than enough for the job.

From Indian Navy's official website:

One Russian designed submarine is under construction.
Will it truly be enough to challenge China? How many submarines does China have? And who could possibly know for sure, given how these devious, sneaky Chinese are cleverly hiding them? o_O

What is the development in lroject Varsha? Any update? @vstol Jockey

seriously , SCS ? you do understand that if we do sail into SCS we will be encountering chinese navy whose numbers are not only large but also right in to their backyard.

As long as we have a carrier that can cover us from the air, we can operate anywhere within the range of the CBG. Of course, this means the jets should also be capable of doing the job, which the Mig-29K cannot, but the TEDBF can. Or the Rafale-M. Either one.

So with a carrier, AAW and ASW ships, Nerpa and a supply ship or two we can operate anywhere. Doesn't matter if it's the SCS or elsewhere. The very point of operating a carrier is to gain sea control. And it's not just the CBG, there will be other ships as well, conducting other missions.

Whether it's their backyard or ours, the threat is pretty much the same. During war, we will naturally concentrate on the chokepoints, but even controlling many of those chokepoints requires carriers.

yeah just like we detected their intrusion in ladakh I suppose.

For any incursion to be detected, we need to have the systdes in place which probably were not. Limited budget often constrains the resources to be put in place where they required.

If DRDO can design a SSN ? Why we need foreign design for a SSK ?

The import program will deliver faster and with all the technologies needed. The Kilos are going to leave service over the next 10 years without replacements. If we go for an indigenous replacement now, it won't become available when we need it.

More than anything else, we will likely face R&D manpower issues if we go for two programs simultaneously. Even our fighter jet designs came in sequentially before the strength of the manpower increased. So, once the SSN design phase ends within the next 3 years, we can then begin the design phase of the indigenous SSK.

Actually we are having two submarine programs running simultaneously. And both are indigenous with all the data and hydrodynamic analysis being done locally. It is going to give us much better experience than arihant program.

Are you talking about an SSK, apart from the SSN?

I don't think any SSK has entered design stage, it's only in the concept stage.
