New Delhi: Sheikh Hasina has resigned as Bangladesh Prime Minister and the Army is moving to take control amid violent protests demanding that she quit. Bangladesh Army chief General Waker-Uz-Zaman told the media that the Army will form an interim government and has appealed to the protesters to return to the path of peace.

"There is a crisis in the country. I have met Opposition leaders and we have decided to form an interim government to run this country. I take all responsibility and promise to protect your life and property. Your demands will be fulfilled. Please support us and stop violence. If you work with us, we can move towards a proper solution. We cannot achieve anything through violence," he said.

Ms Hasina, who started her fifth term as Prime Minister earlier this year, left state capital Dhaka in a military helicopter and may be headed to a safer location in India.

The 76-year-old is accompanied by her younger sister, Sheikh Rehana. Protesters demanding her resignation have, meanwhile, stormed Gono Bhaban, the Prime Minister's official residence, local media reports have said. The Bangladesh Army, it appears, is moving to take control and had reportedly given a 45-minute ultimatum to the Prime Minister to step down.

Shocking visuals of protesters vandalising a statue of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Ms Hasina's father and the tallest leader in the country's history who led its fight for Independence from Pakistan, are playing out on Dhaka's streets.

What's Behind The Protests

The protests in Bangladesh, which began last month and escalated swiftly, started as an agitation against a quota system under which 30 per cent of government jobs were reserved for family members of Muktijoddhas -- those who fought in Bangladesh's war of independence in 1971. The protesters have said this system favours supporters of the ruling Awami League and want a merit-based system to replace it. As the protests grew, the Awami League dispensation tried to crush it with an iron hand. In the clashes that followed, more than 300 people were killed.

What added to the protesters' anger was a remark by Prime Minister Hasina. "If not the grandchildren of the freedom fighters, then who will get quota benefits? The grandchildren of the 'Razakars'?" she asked. "This is my question. I want to ask the people of the nation. If the protesters don't comply, I can do nothing. They can continue their protest. If protesters damage properties or attack cops, the law will take its course. We can't help."

The Razakar remark touched a raw nerve. A paramilitary force recruited by Pakistan Army during the 1971 liberation war, Razakars carried out mass atrocities, including mass killings, rapes, and torture.

I thought Hasina would be able to survive in power for 1 last term. This quota issue is such a weird hill for her to die on. I hope that a moderate coalition is able to form and that the region's economy can continue developing.

MSN article sourcing from some Bloomberg source says Hasina is fleeing to London.

We will have to eventually. Give or take 18 months.
It would seriously derail India's economic progress if they had to invade Bangladesh so I don't think that will happen. The best they can hope for is that some form of secular administration remains in power - whether that be a military government or a moderate coalition government. It is in India's best interest to get ahead of this.

Worst case scenario is some super Islamist government that immediately starts causing issues with India to distract its population from whatever governance shortcomings. It would be awful for India to be surrounded by failing Islamist states.

I said earlier that Modi ji's preaching to Putin about "This is not an era of war" will come back to haunt us. This is proper time to attack and stop CIA from doing another regime change around us. But will we do it cause it ain't no era of war🤣

The immediate priority should be to secure the international border. Too many instances of cow smuggling and people sneaking in. Fencing the border will take a while. We should beef up our forces as a precaution.

Attacking BD is not going to fix any thing other than making us look like fools. This govt is no different from other previous congress govt , they are busy looting for themselves while playing music to the media. Its high time we also had a deep state that looks after states security rather than leaving it to the petty ppl in the govt.

why would you do that ? whats the advantage ? better to sit out until things become normal & make the military blunder it out.
80 lakh Hindus. Siliguri corridor.

@vstol Jockey will india be able to defend chicken neck? The only decent weapon we have now is that mere 36 Rafale.
The problem is not immediate. But China can very easily provide 500 tanks, 500 howitzers, 50-100 J10s, etc to create a new field army size formation of Bangladesh just to ensure that our attention is divided.

Even if the entire Chinese forces fought on behalf of these half-baked jihadis, they would surrender in a week tops.

If we have a potential adversary, the first thing is to attack it economically, that is where Bangladesh has an advantage over Pakistan and other minnows around. I hope we have cultivated enough internal leverage.

already it is filled with radical islamists & now you want to give those monkeys an excuse to jihadis into India.

unless ppl there revolt & ask for help its a no go zone. Worse is we will create another overt enemy like pakistan on our borders. Either dismantle bangladesh completely or do nothing.

Hold your horses, Let's see how this plays out, there is no need to invade anyone, yet.
