2021 Tokyo Olympics

Olympics is one good example to prove that India is equally bad at every thing. Indian govt is so corrupt & incompetent that they cannot find even single person for each of the simpler disciplines like running, swimming or long jump.
It's multiple reason really. A lot of is how indian culture is more education centered on making wage slaves than on making individuals..

In patents yes we are the third largest contributer to patents after China and U.S but we suck in maths and physics Olympiads. So when it comes to international competitiveness we are behind, but I feel it's more due to the GoI since the independence really doesn't really care about the global perception of its people. You see our entire education system and culture is geared for creating wageslaves not Human excellence...

Considering I was a sportsman myself, I can tell you that there's no market for sports.

First off, we are not encouraged to take up sports when our age is in the single digits or even early teens, 'cause that's the responsibility of the parents, not the govt. In case you are lucky enough to get in, you don't have the facilities to train in or the experienced coaches to train you. Or you can get all that for a significantly large price, unaffordable to most. But if you don't get into sports very early, then there's no point in looking at a sports career in the first place. And no parent would deem sports a career choice when the market doesn't exist. The question you should ask yourself is when was the last time you watched any Olympic-qualified sports on TV with only Indian athletes in it, particularly any single player event? If people do not watch, it's not broadcasted, and that means there's no market. So there's no potential to earn money for the athletes, hence it's not a viable career option. And I'm not even getting into the politics involved during selections.

Most sportsmen in India have full time jobs, and they practice in their spare time. So, no family support, no public support, no money, no facilities, no trainers, no time, dunno why people are expecting sportsmen to create miracles when competing with other sportsmen who have all the above.

This is not a failure of the govt, we are not the Chinese govt, it's a failure of the people. Any interest in sports is largely limited to cricket.

But we do extremely well in sports where minimum physical activity and financial investment are needed, like snooker, billiards, chess etc.

As the public becomes richer and more sophisticated over many years, interest in entertainment will increase, so will interest in sports, that's when we will start investing in it.

THREAD!!

This here is a great thread by a US citizen of Indian origin on the disparities in the system between the 2 nations. The US government incidentally doesn't have a ministry for sports not does it fund athletes unlike the rest of the world. The US owes it's success in Olympics to it's universities & general love of sports by its citizens.

Yeah they are the only country with no government funded program. Free market capitalism at its finest I would say..

Nothing to do with free market capitalism more of attitude towards doing things. Even if we have corruption free unbiased selection we can certainly make mark in some of the sports. They have better system which ensures best are selected not some one with connections. Its just like education , if you are in a class of top scorers probability of scoring higher increases as you will compete with them and improve yourselves. If you are with laggards you can compare with other laggards and feel happy about it without any intention of progress. In Indian society every one wants to just play politics and surround themselves with hypocrites and idiots which makes secure. End result is that every section of the society just rots. Few ppl who try to rise above the system is crushed.

At the end of the day you make that society.

Its ... not that simple. Almost ALL American schools have basic sports facilities and a dedicated coach. In india, it is very likely that your school has no playground at all. Unlike India, getting an admission in the top rated universities in America require one form of extra-carricular or another. Sports being one of the most known one. In India, none of the government funded universities (or very few, AFAIK) actually reward you for having any sports experience in your resume. Then there is a culture of inter school sports that is almost missing in our country. And lets not even talk about social life in american high schools. The cliche of "Jocks" vs "Nerds" is way exaggerated but it has elements of truth in it.

So, you see, a student in USA by the design of the system there has both motivation and facilities to excel in sports.

What's so surprising about this?

To have the physique needed for sports at the global level, you need proper training.
what physique are you talking abt , do you need to be 10 foot to be a table tennis player or 18 foot to shoot an arrow ?
what about gymnastic, shooting or diving , do you need to be composed of U232 ?
At least get a damn good horse and qualify for equestrian.

For training there's is no excuse, cant select, cant train ....cant properly run the country...yeah million more excuses.

It's clear you have zero knowledge on sports.

Physique is not just what you are born with but also what you built. That requires training and conditioning.
