Godrej Aerospace delivers the first airframe assembly for the Air Launched version of the BrahMos Missile

Godrej Aerospace, a unit of Godrej & Boyce Mfg. Co. Ltd., today handed over the first airframe assembly of the Air Launched version of the prestigious BrahMos missile to Defense Research Development Laboratories (DRDL) for qualification of the indigenously manufactured assembly. This continues the company’s proud tradition of contributing toward augmenting India’s defense capabilities. In a ceremony marking the occasion, the completion documents were handed over to Dr. Dashrath Ram Yadav, Distinguished Scientist & Program Director (BrahMos), DRDL by Mr. Jamshyd Godrej, Chairman and Managing Director, Godrej & Boyce.
The missile section manufactured by Godrej Aerospace will undergo stringent testing processes set by DRDL. Godrej is poised to deliver the next set of these airframe assemblies by December 2018. They also aim to produce the first indigenous missile booster which up till now was imported. In December 2017, Godrej Aerospace had won an order for 100 sets of airframe assemblies for the Air Launched version, production for which started soon after. Till date they have also supplied over 100 sets of the land version of the missile to BrahMos Aerospace Pvt. Ltd.

Even if we do buy Tomahawks there is no need to stop the development of Nirbhay.

It was mentioned that we want Tomahawks to be fired from ships and submarines. It's possible that we are looking at a proven missile to equip our submarines, until the Nirbhay matures. But that doesn't mean we cannot develop Nirbhay for the army and air force.

I don't understand this, when Brahmos with 600 km range is under development and Nirbhay will further be upgraded, then from where did news of buying Tomahawk came into existence ??:unsure:

The Nirbhay cruise missile developed by India’s Aeronautical Development Establishment (ADE) is set to make its final developmental trial in April, more than a year after the weapon successfully completed its previous flight test, an ADE official told Jane’s during the 20–24 February Aero India 2019 exhibition in Bangalore.

The official said that all issues related to the missile’s control hardware and software have been resolved, and that preparations are under way for a low-altitude flight test, which is expected to be its final developmental trial. The official declined to provide specific details on the rectified issues.

The 6 m-long, nuclear-capable, land-attack Nirbhay has a diameter of 0.52 m and is fitted with two tapering-chord fold-out (backwards) wings with a span of 2.7 m. The one-tonne missile is brought up to the takeover speed of its turbofan engine by a jettisonable solid propellant booster. The missile cruises at a speed of 270–305 m/s, and its maximum strike range is claimed to be 1,000 km.

The ADE official said that the missile programme is on track and expressed optimism that the weapon will soon be moving into the production-standard configuration, followed by the operational testing phase. He added that once the technology behind the missile is certified, there is a proposal to develop an air-launched variant of the Nirbhay within two to three years.

The intended air-launched variant would be developed to be fired from Su-30MKI multirole fighter aircraft, each of which would carry a maximum of two missiles.

Notably, while the Nirbhay missiles for the first four trials were powered by Russian-made NPO Saturn 36MT mini turbofan engines, the missile prototype slated to be launched in April will carry the indigenously designed and developed Manik turbofan engine.

Bengaluru: The stage is set for the final test-firing of the BrahMos supersonic missile from India’s front-line fighter aircraft, Su-30MKI, the CEO and managing director of the missile manufacturer has told ThePrint.

If successful, the test will clear the way for the induction of the missile into the Indian Air Force (IAF), giving India’s air combat prowess a powerful boost.

“We will do the final test-firing of the BrahMos from Sukhoi soon,” Sudhir Mishra, the CEO and MD of BrahMos Aerospace, told ThePrint on the sidelines of Aero India in Bengaluru.

“The objective is to drop the missile from any point in the air envelope of the Su-30 and the missile will take its trajectory and hit the target,” Mishra added.

BrahMos Aerospace is a joint venturebetween the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Russia’s joint stock company ‘military and industrial corporation’ Mashinostroyenia, which is tasked with the designing, development, production and marketing of the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile.

The name of the missile is an amalgam of the Brahmaputra and the Russian river Moskva. Weighing 2.5 tonnes, the BrahMos missile is the heaviest weapon to be deployed on India’s Su-30 fighter aircraft.

The 2.5-tonne missile flies at almost three times the speed of sound (Mach 2.8) and has a range of about 300 km.

The range of the missile can be extended up to 400 km as certain technical restrictions were lifted after India became a full member of the Missile Technology Control Regime (MTCR) in 2017.

Its land and warship versions have already been inducted into the armed forces. IAF sources told ThePrint that the final firing would take place in less than four months.

‘A great achievement’

The Sukhoi test, Mishra said, would be the final one for the missile, which will be a “great achievement” since they would then start delivering the missile to the IAF.

“Everything is working in a perfect timeline,” said Mishra. “The IAF has a contract with HAL [Hindustan Aeronautics Limited] to modify the fighters for BrahMos. The IAF will start delivering them this year and we will be delivering the missile, which the IAF can use whenever they want.”

Mishra also weighed in on another major initiative, a lighter but potent “NG” version of the BrahMos, which he said could be test-fired from the the Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas Mark 1A within the next two years. The missile, he added, would be a real game-changer.

“It is going to be the future of our armed forces,” he said. “Though initially designed for the Navy, we are now developing an air-to-air version,” he added, crediting Defence Secretary Sanjay Mitra for the idea.

Mishra said Mitra had opined, soon after taking over in 2017, that India would not be able to sell the Tejas until it boasted of an Indian missile. He said BrahMos Aerospace, along with the DRDO and HAL, had already performed system studies and performance tests.

“Certain modification has been made to the LCA wing to carry the BrahMos, and some changes have been made to our missile too,” Mishra added, saying the BrahMos NG missile would have a range of at least 300 km.

He said the BrahMos NG would be used to hit slow-moving targets like a airborne warning and control systems (AWACS), transporters and refuellers. Mishra added that the BrahMos NG would be a great asset to submarines because it could even be fired from a torpedo tube.

"We will come to hypersound via an increase in range. We have already confirmed 400 kilometers, in order to increase the range to 500, it is needed to increase the speed. Now the missile flies at speeds of 2.8 mach. We will achieve the speed of hypersound through modernization, it is more than 4.5 mach," Maksichev said.
