Ursa Major lands $91M to power a mini missile for F-35s
Key Points
  • The U.S. Navy awarded Ursa Major $137 million for solid rocket motors for the Compact Air-to-Air Missile and the Naval Modular Missile.
  • The $91 million CAAM contract covers a 7-inch motor, and the $46 million NMM contract covers a 10-inch quad-pack motor.
For CAAM, Ursa Major is designing a 7-inch (178 mm) motor. That is the same diameter as the AIM-120 AMRAAM and wider than the 5-inch AIM-9X Sidewinder, the Navy’s current short-range air-to-air missile. The company says the motor uses Highly Loaded Grain, a propellant design that packs more fuel into the motor case, giving a small missile more energy in the same volume. Ursa Major said it is building the development motor with the same methods it plans to use in full production, so it can move to high-rate manufacturing once the design is qualified.
