I made more today, than I have across all my investment in India for the last four years. Thrice more!Yea, the American regulator has rigged the system for one side trading. But this has been the case ever since 2007. Thank SEBI and NSE, for what we have here.

This is like "Behti Ganga main hath dho lo"!! Why do these companies need government funding to establish fabs?? Qualcomm was sitting over $40 billion cash, yet always chose fabless model. Right now Intel is struggling with 10 nm process and already outsourced to TSMC for latest nodes.
There are lot of ifs & buts, the only company that can supply at global level is TSMC and they are yet to start construction of new plant in arizona which will go online by 2024. That leaves the supply chain high & dry for the foreseeable future. US govt funding to tech companies will certainly be questioned by so called liberals/progressives ( whatever you want to call them) in democratic party itself.I think there will be a broader trend for more countries/economic blocs fabricating their own chips. More companies like samsung, tmsc, intel, etc are expanding or getting into the chip manufacturing game - let alone China's push into the sector. It's good in the long term, more competition breeds more innovation afterall.
capitalism my dear, remember semi-conductor industry is cyclical in nature. Its only that pandemic has made it worse. Once pandemic is over and after 2-3 years plants will have excess capacity or become outdated bcos of new manufacturing process. This is like "Behti Ganga main hath dho lo"!! Pandemic created supply chain issues for everything, starting from flower pots to refrigerators to window blinds. Chip supply disruption was no exception. These greedy companies are simply trying grab their pound of flesh.
BTW, US government had been paying billions for development of arm based server chips. Last year they cut down the grant and immediately Marvell closed the whole group !! Whether it's India or US, everyone loves free lunch at the expense of tax payers money.
SMIC is far away from mastering 7nm at this point, but that doesn't mean they can't. Chinese government has allocated billions of $ and Chinese and US companies are loosing people to these Chinese govt sponsored programs !! I heard the salaries offered are more than Bay Area salaries (in the range of 500k to 1.5 mil $ depending on experience level and the unique experience they bering in). There are lot of ifs & buts, the only company that can supply at global level is TSMC and they are yet to start construction of new plant in arizona which will go online by 2024. Other thing which has gone completely unnoticed in US is mastering of 7nm by chinese. This was a complete surprise as they were still struggling with 14nm process for dram chips and now they have even built a gpu ( they also have a cpu built with IP from AMD).

China is catching up: SMIC foundry is now able to produce 7 nm chips
SMIC's N+1 (7 nm) chips are mostly on par with GloFo's, Samsung's and TSMC's competing nodes as far as scalability and power consumption is concerned, but the Chinese tech is still a step behind when it comes to performance. Next goal for SMIC is to dethrone TSMC in regards to Chinese chip orders.www.notebookcheck.net
All in all if US/taiwanese companies dont produce enuf chips, chinese will step in as they have done with other products. They might well start supplying DRAM's & controller chips, then eventually compete at the highest level.
This pandemic well might become a turning point in history if it follows the same trajectory.

This shortage is temporary and I didn't even realize the shortage till I read the news. Last year dozens of our chips went to TSMC and none of our programs were significantly impacted. This is more noise than actual substance.capitalism my dear, remember semi-conductor industry is cyclical in nature. Its only that pandemic has made it worse. Building fabrication plant is not cheap , it costs tons of money like 4-10 billion dollars and gestation period is 2-3 years for returns to show up.
There is a good reason why AMD sold of its foundry business as they could not invest so much capital and wait for returns. Even intel will be doing the same. You are talking about qualcomm's cash, apple can simply buy tsmc if they want, so can amazon or microsoft.
Companies are only bothered about profit & loss, economic security is the responsibility of govt and govt has to pay for it!![]()
The USG is allowing these companies to react that way because the USG cannot justify subsidies into chip manufacturing to the public without such "external" pressure.
There is palpable fear that China will invade Taiwan over the next few years and practically take over the semiconductor industry. Hence the urgency in many countries to move out of Taiwan when it comes to core electronics industries, especially the US.
Man .. you have a very fertile ground for imagination.
